Thumbs up for the AA

Two weeks ago I was just about 200 yds from my destination and I heard an awful noise and saw smoke or steam coming from the back of the car. Anyway, baca use it was midnight I gait a mate to drop me home. In the morning I went to get my car. Lifted the engine lid and started the car. Immediately, the noise appeared again. I looked under the car and it soon became clear that the water pump had gone. My cover with the AA is an absolute minimum, repair at the roadside or be towed to the nearest garage....omg. Anyway, rang the AA who said they would be one hour. Made a cup of tea, just sat down and I got a call, the AA man was outside the house, took fifteen minutes. After both identifying the issue, I said to the AA guy that a video on YouTube shows that the job isn't too difficult to do.......I was just jesting. Anyway, the guy told me he was a mechanic before joining the AA and said that if I could get a replacement water pump, he would have a go and fit it. I couldn't believe it. I promptly rang around and said I could get a replacement unit but would be around 50 minutes. He stated that's OK as it will take me a while to get the pump off. To cut a long story short, he did the job in just und three hours. It was cold, foggy and raining but he got under the car on the side of a road and did a fantastic job. I couldn't believe it. I only had twenty quid in my wallet and duly gave it to him as a tip, I wish I had more cash on me as he should have got more really. I will certainly be thinking about upping my membership after this.
anyone else had some successes they would wish to share. Well done the AA

I have used the breakdown service also, and some are very good and some are just awful, all depends on the person you get

I know, I was amazed and therefore thought it was worth a post on this site. Still can't believe it. Mind you, being picky, I wish he caught all my anti freeze as I've just had to redo and at £29 per 5 litres it has worked out expensive as I had to buy two.

I take it being picky was said tongue in cheek. If your water pump went there is a good chance a fair percent of the coolant loss would have taken place before the AA man got to it. At 4 hours or so to fit, if it had been done by a garage you got a great deal if all you needed to replace was the coolant. Did you replace the serpentine belt as well. Mine was shot when my water pump went but I have also seen recommendations to replace it if replacing the water pump. It's a simple DIY job and not expensive.

Regards

Yes Graeme, tongue in cheek of course. Serpentine belt checked by AA guy who said no need to replace As was in excellent condition. Have replaced it once before when I fitted a new alternator and agree, the job is very easy, thanks anyway.
