I know I'm preaching to the converted, but I must say having finally driven one, I am absolutely blown away.
My Boxster was in to the OPC for some work over the weekend, and I had the pleasure of a basalt black V6 tiptronic with just 200 miles on the clock. It was just lovely. Even the looks grew on me over the weekend, and just loved driving it. I mainly did city work in it, which it is far more suited to with its lofty driving position, smooth ride, auto box and panoramic visibility than the Boxster. It may have been a different story if I was hooning about the B roads, but the fact is, I live in the City and it did a great job.
The niggles were that the steering was a too light and the steering wheel a bit thin. The V6 is overwhelmed by the weight of the car, and the bulk of it is really noticable under braking.
This particular example had parktronic (fantastic) and PCM and 19" alloys - I only missed the bi-xenons.
The biggest suprise for me was how much my wife loved it. I thought she'd find it too flashy and OTT, but she thought it was great. Apart from the fact that it is bigger than her first flat, and with heated seats, climate control and Bose a damn site better equipped, she thought the driving position and visibility was far better than the Boxster.
If we ever need to chop the Boxster in for some sensible shoes, I'd always thought I'd go down the exec estate route (E class/5 series/A6 Avant) but the Cayenne experience has knocked that into a cocked hat. A nearly new Cayenne seems infinitely more appealing!
The only issue for me is the hideous fuel consumption. Over a period of around 120 miles (I zeroed everything on the PCM when I left the OPC) the car averaged 12mpg.... This was because it was all city driving rather than because I was being Walter Rohl but even the Boxster would get nearly double that. I simply can not afford to justify that kind of crazy consumption.
So, the Cayenne experience seems to have only convinced me that a large 4x4 is a car I'd like to go for at some point, but being sensible, it would have to be a diesel and therefore, only an X5, Toureg, XC90 or the like would do.
