TICK OVER WHEN HOT

Have noticed the above when the car has had a good run/thrashing it blips on tick over only from 900rpm down to 600rpm and back up again sometime infrequently sometiimes not!

I has had a new Mass Air flow meter 1000 miles ago, could it be a air flow problem still maybe a loose pipe or somerhing or do any sensors go associated with this?

I had the same problem which gradually got worse until it was almost stalling. The MAF sensor was suggested. Seeing as it's an easy job to do I went in to get mine out and found the old one bodged in with broken original screws and self tappers. I tried to get all of the induction pipes out to work on getting the MAF sensor fixed with a bit more elbow room. I took out the throttle body and it was black and sooty. This needed cleaning whatever so I cleaned it up. I was unsuccessful at getting the air box out so put it all back together for another day. It has run beautifully ever since with less hesitation on the pick up and smooth tickover.

It seems this is a particular problem when the car has a few miles on it so take out the throttle body and clean it. What I did notice was when closed there is a tiny gap through the butterfly which I guess allows air through for idle. Before cleaning this was blocked and the butterfly didn't shut properly. Mine is the fly by wire throttle on a 2000 2.7. I stand to be corrected but what I think happens is the butterfly closes, engine almost stalls due to lack of air so the ECU has to open the butterfly. It then closes it off because the engine is no longer about to stall and expects a bit of air to get through but it doesn't so it goes round again.
 
thanks for response seems strange that it has a new maf meter fitted at the last service (before i got the car) but still playing up, will have a look at the throttle body, forgive my ignorance but how do i access the throttle body ie do i need to start stripping back the rear of the car or just jack up and locate underneath? I have ordered a cd workshop manual today so that will help! thanks

When you go in the engine at the top there is the air filter box on the passenger side. The big pipe that heads towards the engine comes out of this and the MAF sensor is the first thing you see. It sits on top of the pipe held in by 2 screws. If yours is new then it should look newer. Next down the pipe is the throttle body. I don't think yours is completely electronic but you will need to unplug some cables or even take of some mechanical linkage, not sure on yours. A couple of Jubilee clips to loosen and the throttle body should come out. Clean it with carb cleaner. When you put it back use some new Jubilee clips as the old ones are probably corroded and getting a bit frail. It's easy to forget about them on a Boxster because you can't easily look under the bonnet.
 
many thanks for that assume i just need to remove all the carpet from the rear to access?

also would it help if i put some redex or equivelant into the fuel tank to eliminate anything else?

Had the same problem,All I did is disconnected the intake pipe off the throttle body,found it was sooty so I used carb cleaner,sprayed it in and then cleaned with a cotton bud
Worked perfectly.

Did it take you long to get all the carpet out and access the throttle body, ie we talking 30mins or 10mins or an hour?

Do you have an owners manual?

The procedure for lifting the engine cover is in there. It only takes a few minutes. If you don't have a manual Google it. The roof lifts and locks up at the back (best described in the manual) then you take out the plastic compartment thing if you have it, 2 clips to turn. Lift out the carpet piece out then turn the locking screws to lift off the engine cover.

You open the convertible top about 10 cm then you will have access to open the trunk cover just behind the seats. You open 4 screws and remove 2 chains on either side then remove the cover.

Managed to get engine cover off and removed pipes to clean the throttle body all good, except couple of things:

- Having trouble putting the pipe back on the throttle body assume a bit of grease on it should do trick?
- Also is the throttle body removable from engine as can only get in from the pipe side to clean, should i try and spin the throttle butterfly round to clean both sides?
- also will the dash throw up any fault lights following this procedure?
