Ticking dashboard

Hello

My 87 3.2 has developed a loud ticking noise, coming from the top of the dashboard, directly behind the steering wheel, (but only when the car is moving - some relief there !). This noise occurs at a few hertz, and does not seem to be connected with road speed, just with the road surface. It is either on (very annoying !) or off (blissful peace and quiet).

I know where it comes from, as, when I push the top of the dashboard down, the ticking stops, and returns when I take my hand away (not too easy to drive like this).

I have removed one of the instruments from the dashboard, and have found that, from the inside, the dash is topped with a metal plate, so I can' t touch the plastic from underneath.

So, 2 questions.

1. Any idea what it could be ? I am aware that this is difficult to diagnose remotely, without hearing it, but I have to ask.

2. How easy is it to remove the plastic dash top, so that I can at least put some padding between the plastic and the metal ?

Please help, before I go crackers, and start talking to ' er indoors, just to mask the noise.

Hi John

To remove the dash you need to remove the screen. After that it is about 6 M6 nuts and a few plastic clips.
