Ticking Engine

Hi all. Previously a 944 owner an am now starting the search for an early 996. Looked at the first one this morning and wanted to ask about a ticking noise from the engine once warmed up. It was coming from the engine and sounded sort of "top endy" There was a Cayman on the forecourt next to it and as it has the same engine (so I understand) the salesman said "they all do that, the Cayman will do the same, want me to start that up". The Cayman didn't do it once warmed up.
Is this a usual noise for the engine once warmed up? Is it is I wanted to know as I inspect others.
Also the rear spoiler warning light was on, despite us putting it up and down. Is this usual/common?
Have got a copy of the PCGB buyers checklist.
It did look half tidy for a 16 year old car but only had service book and the rest of the doc's were not yet with the car.
Didn't test drive.

Many thanks in advance.

Nigel

They can be a bit tappity when cold but that goes after a few mins. I've not heard one do it the other way round.

We have encountered some engine rattles which appear when warm that are not cheap to fix. I would want to take the car on a long test drive and then have a listen. If it was just a dry tappet the it will be quiet. If it's more serious then it will still be there.
On early cars the spoiler light stays on until the car moves off (and speed sensors are known to work)
Overall - when buying avoid risk!!!

Mine ticks, right hand bank, it sounds like a tappet, it's a tickover thing. It's done it for the last 56000 miles and three and a bit years (though I don't recall if it did it when I bought it and drove it home half-way across the country), it hasn't got worse, nothing's fallen off/punched out/blown up. Keeping the oil level right up makes a difference. The car had a full 111-point inspection at an OPC a couple of years ago and it didn't bother them. I've rather grown tired of indies wanting me to believe that the engine needs to come out for them to take a lot of my money away.

Interesting as I had a problem a few years ago. felt mine was very noisey on cold start up, and was told by my OPC that the engine needs to come out for them to inspect it. It turns out that it was quiet normal and 10 years on and no change and the sound clears when the engine is warm. I then had a problem a few years ago when the engine started to do it when warm and again I was told it was an engine out Job, I spoke to an indie who advices me to get the engine warm drive it hard and if this doesn't work then they woukd do an oil and filter change and flush the engine through and that worked job done, the sound cleared. But I would stay away from one that was like this all the time as plenty out there that are not.

Cheers Phil

Possibly Hydraulic lifters ?! I have had a similar issue. The engine was fine when started but after 10 minutes when the car warmed up (on tick over) the ticking noise started. When revved the noise stops. Had the engine flushed with Wynn's Hydraulic Valve Lifter Concentrate. Oil changed from Mobil1 0w40 to thicker Mobil1 10w60. This made a big difference. After 300 miles hard driving the problem has pretty much gone. Worth trying before spending a lot of money on other solutions. These cars don't appear to like sitting around not being driven!! Hope this helps [:)]

"They all do that" is not a satisfactory answer. Mines ticks on start-up from cold, but never notice ticking after a run at idle. My 944 used to tick, but that was more from the injectors.

Do try a C4 if you get the chance as the balanced handling is very similar to the 944 in my view.

Mine developed a tick which I convinced myself was either a tappet or piston slap. Got really paranoid about it. Turned out to be a loose spark plug! Simple enough problem but the thread had become damaged so head had to come off which resulted in a whole line of WYAIT jobs! Mindyou, at least I now have full confidence that all is now good.
