Ticking noise

Steelback

Started my 2007 Cayman up this morning and have heard a very faint ticking noise coming from the engine. More notable from the drivers side intake area. I have only just got the car and have not noticed it before, is it anything to worry about ?

Very difficult to say Kevin.

The flat-6 is a very "ticky" engine - tappets and injectors (on the DFI engine) at start-up and also when warm. Radiated sound from the engine gets reflected from the ground and out the sides of the car.

Maybe you should get underneath if you can and make sure that nothing's touching the polybelt and that the sound isn't coming from the ancillaries.

Do all obvious checks first, like oil an water levels.

It sounds like you have a gen 1 - if it’s the smaller capacity engine it’s very unlikely to have some of the serious problems you hear of.

I’d get it run up to temp and recheck. Avoid letting it tick over to achieve this as the oil pump isn’t working very hard at low rpm.

(The hydraulic lifters are oil fed and need a nice supply of warm, thin oil to be quiet)

Kind Regards Lee

Thanks guys. Very cold this morning when I started it, so could be that. Only started it up and didn't take it for a run so will see what its like next time I take it out. Got it booked in for a bit of work in January so if it continues I will have it checked out.

have you driven anywhere with a lot of leaves laying around ? It could be a leaf has gone into the engine inlet and got stuck in the cooling fan, I had it happen to my 981 recently, about 10 minutes into a drive I noticed a ticking coming from behind my right side I thought initially it might be a valve or solenoid sticking but the more I listened the more convinced I became that it was a leaf in the fan which it turned out to be, I used to work in car dealerships and we would often get people who parked under trees complaint of similar sounds which turned out to be leaves that had got into the heater fan.

my noise sound a bit like when kids peg cardboard onto their bikes so the spokes hit it as the wheels go round

No I don't think I have driven anywhere with too many leaves around but you never know, I will have a look tommorrow

you might not be able to see anything if that is what's causing it, I did manage to pull one out but the noise was still there I took it to my local Porsche centre the next morning but sods law the noise had stopped, it turned out that it had worked itself further in past the fan hence no more noise
