Hi Barry. We need a photo of that one! Sounds like it might be a noisy tappet. Does it get quieter when warm? When was the last oil change, and what oil is it? If it is a 0W-40, I think I'd be tempted to try an oil change to 5W-40, and see if it helps.

Ticking sound

Hello Richard, just bought a 996 in zanzibar red, with full gt2 kit, wheels etc. Have just noticed a ticking sound coming from the o/s engine bank, ticking increases with revs, any ideas?
Car hasn't been used for a few weeks. It's a 2001 c2, with 38,000 on clock.
thanks in advance Richard.
Regards Barry

Plenty of good 5W-40's on the Approved Oils list in the Technical Articles section. The one which Nick suggests is approved, and my indy uses it too.
On the CArrera I had, it sounded like someone tapping the rocker cover with the metallic end of a screwdriver and it was felt it was a tappet although the tap was lighter in tone than the usual tappet one. It ticked about twice per second and increased with revs but no louder or softer. It turned out to be a loose spark plug!ORIGINAL: redbaz Hello Richard, just bought a 996 in zanzibar red, with full gt2 kit, wheels etc. Have just noticed a ticking sound coming from the o/s engine bank, ticking increases with revs, any ideas? I had the same problem a few years back and my indie told me to drive it hard when warm and to get an oil change which could clear the problem as sometimes tappets get muck caught that can clear, and the advice was right as before the oil was change it cleared. However i got the oil changed anyway for good measure. OPC recommendation was engine out and new tappets which thankfully I didn't go with, and all was well.
