ticking sound

Hey guys,

so i finally got round to mot'ing the car last week (passed at the cost of £650, needed new sensors on the exhaust and rad needed replacing), but after a round trip of about 20 miles its started making a ticking sound, i found this video on youtube that makes the same noise, could anyone roughly guess at what it might be and the cost to replace it( i need to speak nicely to the wife lol).

Cheers :)

no guesses yet? (im not a mechanic, so any suggestions would be appreciated), im not sure if its drivable to take it to the porsche centre or have it towed.

Jeff,

I had a listen to the video and if your engine is making that much noise I'd think it unwise to take it to the OPC, best have a local indi come and take a listen since it sounds bad, if an OPC was to sort it out it will cost loads unless you have a warranty that is. If an indi can spare a mechanic for an hour it won't cost much to get their assessment.

I hope it's not too bad.

Cheers for the reply buddy, i was kinda thinking the same its not worth driving (some of the other vids i seen on youtube regarding the same thing didnt end well!). Will report back when i found out what a mechanic says what it actually is, as after searching the net and other vids i still havent found out exactly what it is making the noise.

Ironic really, the first time i drive the car this year and it breaks down! []

Quick check a mechanic can do is to remove the oil filter to see if there is any debris from the engine ie Swarf (Not a good sign, but easy check).

First sorry for necro'ing an old thread i was going thro my previous posts and i noticed i left this thread unfinished, all the car needed was an oil change and the ticking stopped [:D] , just found this video on youtube that explains the sound much better than my original post.

Jeff, I get this on my 986 S. It sounds exactly the same and I've had my specialist confirm it's likely to be a sticky lifter. It does go away with the gentlelist of revs but does return on idle after a while. I've changed the oil a few times but it doesn't ever fully disappear. The car runs very well in the year I've had it so I'm not worrying about it. I've also had the IMS and RMS done along with clutch and no problems there!

Did yours do it from a cold startup? Mine doesn't, comes when warm.

Simon

Hey Simon, the ticking would start as soon as the engine started (from cold), to be honest i wasnt sure what the problem was as i based my assumptions on the first video i posted in this thread so i never let the engine get warm. After watching the video in my previous post as i still hadnt got round to fixing it (i had put the car into storage after the noise started and didnt start it again for a year or so) i put my faith in lady luck and asked the garage to change the oil/filter during its MOT and the ticking stopped completely.

Hi Jeff, I also noticed my ticking sound more when the air con was off. I guess less load on the car. Turning it on, upped the revs ever so slightly. Basically enough to stop it from happening. It'll be due another oil service shortly so I may get the specialist to check it out again. Although tonight, I did notice it seemed better on a warm idle with the roof down.

Enjoying this top down motoring, beautiful weather for enjoying the Boxster.

Simon

Agreed, the current weather makes the Boxster twice as much fun with the roof down (hard to remember the last time we had so much sun!). Fingers crossed for good luck regarding your specialist saying what the problem is.
