Tickled with my insurance

Just had to get new insurance for Beaky. []

This is usually a nightmare as I seem to spend hours talking to idiots only to be told at the end of the whole ordeal that they can't give me cover - it matters not that my first question to them is "Can you get me insurance on a modified 944 Turbo?"

Anyway, I thought I would try one of the people listed in Porsche post and AON have come up trumps.

Previously I have been reluctant to take out limited mileage policies as I didn't like the thought of budgeting miles relative to events. This year with Beaky being used far less than previously (Jasper the Jag has seen to that) I thought I would go for limited mileage. Having agreed to 5000 miles AON have said, because of the age of the car, my mileage won't be restricted [:)]

Also; I get cover for 5 approved track days per year with additional days (unlikely) at £23 a day, free continental travel, agreed value, windscreen cover and a £250 excess (the excess on track days is £1500).

How cool is that? And........it is half what I was paying Liverpool Victoria who no longer include track day cover.

Result! [:)][:)][:)]

There were a couple of others that were even cheaper but didn't provide track day cover and I was keen to stick with a PCGB sponsor if I could.

Finally a word of advice - If you have a modified car don't bother with Internet insurance quotes. They give you a silly cheap price without asking about modifications. They then phone you up and check all the details (whether you ask them to or not) waste half an hour of your ever shortening life........and then tell you they can't insure you after all. Having told you they can't insure you they then send you e-mails telling you it is your last chance to take out insurance with them before your existing policy runs out.. []

Nice one John [:)]

This looks like exactly the same policy that Scott was telling he has a few weeks ago - it's the one I'll be getting when I'm back on the road.

Hi John,

Just bought my first Porsche - a 944 turbo cab. I've taken out cover with Aon on my existing classic car policy for my Lancia. Did Aon insist that your car was garaged? They told me that they will only cover Porsches that are garaged which is annoying as it means I have to keep it at my folks house which is 8 miles away. Not very convenient.

Hi Simon,

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have a very nice car there.

I don't recall there being a special stipulation on being garaged. They did ask if my car was kept in a locked garage but, as he is any way, I answered "yes" and there was no further comment.

I can see why they would be keen for the cars to be in locked garages, perhaps cabs even more so, as it reduces their risk dramatically.

I love a happy story!

I must learn not to speak too soon.....[8|]

Today I was called from a back garden to be told my trailer, hitched to my perfectly well parked van, had been hit. Turns out elderly driver had heart attack, and drove straight into it....[]

Trailer is badly damaged, but worse the towhitch punched off the towball and through the rear panel, tailgate, bumper, chassis member, spare wheel and whatever else they find.

No problem, I thought, fully comp, legal assistance, recovery, uninsured loss recovery etc. all ticked and paid for so I'll be getting a courteousy ven later, and back at work tomorrow? Well, did you know that a "no fault" accident is not always so?

Apparently, if the driver who caused the accident, no matter how much it was not my fault, is not responsible if he could not have avoided the crash. The example given was if he swerved because a spider fell off the sun visor and spooked him, so a heart attack seems pretty conclusively an "automated response" and thus not his fault!?

So, I'll not be able to claim any of my out of pocket expenses against his insurers, assuming he has insurance, and am going to be pretty seriously out of pocket. Insurance, eh, just how devious can they get? [][][]

That's ridiculous! How can they say that? What ever else it certainly wasn't your fault so whey should you be out of pocket?

If you take this devolved responsibility line you could, theoretically, have an accident and claim you weren't to blame because you were laughing about something on the radio.

Obviously one feels very sorry for the heart attack victim but perhaps he was a smoker and thus susceptible to heart attacks and, as such, shouldn't have been driving any way.

My experience of insurance companies is they are very quick to take your money but very slow in reacting when you need them. Regrettably you may have to be a little belligerent to get them to appreciate your point of view.

How can there be a 'no fault' accident??????

I fully appreciate the poor chap having a heart attack but surely it was still his fault and his insurance company knew the risk when taking on customer of more senior years. As a small business myself I pay a ridiculous premium for a fully loaded motor trader policy for my van and would hope I am covered for that sort of accident. My renewal is due this month so I think I shall ask some pertinent questions before coughing up.

sorry to hear that Paul, I am not suprised. Last year someone hit my porsche whilst it was parked legally and I was not in it. My wife was in the passenger seat and got her number as she drove off. The police were not interested - they told me she was insured and local so go through the insurance. I did, they contacted her and she denied it so there was no claim - would have been less than the excess for me to claim off my own policy.

Renewing my second car with its own policy no claims etc. from a different company they asked if I had any claims over the last year, in a way that suggested they new about the 'claim' on the other car. I explained that it ended in no claim and the car was hit whilst it was parked. they recalculated my premium and added 30%.

I have full no claims on both cars, but when I started the policy on the second car was given no no claims and had to build it seperately. So when its in their favour they are completly seperate, but if its in their favour to link them they suddenly get connected.

Scum the lot of them.

Tony

explained, car parked, somone hit it hardly any damage she denied it
