Any advice please,whilst out in my C4 tip today I noticed that the tickover,on a couple of occasions,crept up to just over a thousand revs and after a few seconds dropped back down to normal,about 750 revs.I ignored it and ended up on a motorway,gave it a thrashing (that fixes everything doesn't it) and when I came off and pulled up at some traffic lights I got a load of blue smoke for a few seconds.Driving home after that it seemed ok other than the tickover being high and drives ok with no warning lights.Any ideas gentlemen? My imagination is going into hyperdrive at the moment,I thought when I get home I'll post this thread and then I read the previous thread before typing this,bloody scary what can happen isn't it?

Sounds like the air oil seperator to me. Happened in my boxster S a few years ago. Was a cheap fix too. Try not to worry mate am sure it will be ok. But ill second Richards view whatever it is. Steve

Thanks for the replies,they've put me at ease,I'll sleep tonight now.While I'm on the forum I might as well ask is the seperator repairable or renewable? and how can I identify it as I've not needed to do much maintenance on the car yet and wouldn't recognise it if you hit me with it.Again thanks for the replies,my sanity is intact until my next crisis.
A good check is to remove the inlet hose of the throttle body, open the butterfly, and look inside with a torch. If the inner surfaces are glossy with oil residue, then the AOS has definitely failed.
They are a pig to change on Tips. Located on the top of the engine, right at the front of the engine compartment. I would have a word with an indy. I know manuals can be done with the engine in place, but I think it might be an engine out job on a Tip.

Know what you mean but no point worrying until you know for sure. The boxster was 240 pounds. Get it checked out and let us all know. It will be fine I am sure.

Hi Steve,not sorted yet but going in this coming weekend,I'll keep you posted on the cost.By the way,while I was at my local indy sorting it out I noticed two scrapped engines,both 997's with less than 30,000 miles,my 100,000 mile 996 with a knackered a.o.s doesn't seem so bad now.
