My recently bought 944 is a real pleasure to drive and for a car with 202,000 miles is in amazing condition. Took it out yesterday when I was up in Derbyshire for a blast on some good old A roads where I could blow the cobwebs out over the hills.

I had been a bit concerned last week as the water in the expansion tank had stayed cool all the time, even on a 200 mile trip which I thought was odd. After yesterday's thrash it was hot and presume either an air lock or something was previously preventing water getting round.

The problem now is after 20 minutes gunning it around the hills the tickover wouldnt come down below 1200rpm. I left it for a while then checked that the throttle spindle was returning which it was but revs stayed up.

Today just chugging round its OK

Any thoughts?
 
hmm.. difficult to say Steve, however if the car wasn't used much by the previous owner or only used in town it's possible the blast along A roads did indeed clear out some cobwebs and has allowed the car to breath more. If it's a solid 1200 with no surging I would try screwing in the small screw on top of the throttle housing to see if it will return to 900rpm. If it does and again it's solid then I'd leave it that way. This screw is not truely an idle control screw but it will do in this instance, you can also try tapping the idle control valve situated under the inlet manifold first to see if this let's the idle drop to 900, if it does then you may need a new valve as it's sticking, also it's best to do this first before tampering with the screw on the throttle housing although I mention it here because if the last owner was finding the idle dropping due to the car not being given a proper run then he himself may have adjusted it to get a better idle.
