tight 3rd gear and oil leak ?

ive just purchased a boxster s and after it has been parked in the garage for a few days i get a spot of oil on the floor. ive been told by opc that it requires a ring main oil seal and it is a common problem has anyone else had this problem because opc have quoted £900.00 for this job but they told me it wont cause a gearbox malfunction if not treated, the only thing it may cause is the clutch to wear out.
I also have a problem with 3rd gear when the car is cold, it is a little bit tight to select for the 1st 5 mins of driving but then its ok. anyone eles had this problem or is it just my bad luck.
the car has only done 32000 miles and has a full dealer history with a major £782.00 service done in november 2005 and the only advice on the invoice is brake discs starting to wear.

Take a searc on "Rear Main Seal" or "RMS" (it's not ring main seal).

Yes it's VERY common.

£900 is a joke! Which OPC is this?[]

thanks for reply, it was chester porsche or road range as they used to be known.
the lady i spoke to in the service dept said it was a nine hour job at a cost of £100.00 per hour
( nice work if u can get it ). have you had any problem with the 3rd gear on yours ?

Sorry, no I haven't heard of any 3rd gear problems.

It's a 6 hour job to do an RMS. Very well documented here and on other forums on the web.
Unless they were quoting for additional work(?) then I'm stunned they quoted for 9.
I bet Porsche Cars GB would be as well...[8|]

Swindon quoted me £725 two months ago.

JCB..

Don't know your personal situation but on my 2.7 the dealer pushed for a goodwill payment from Porsche - and got it!

The car was 2.5 years old at the time and - as the boys have said - it's a well documented problem. If you've got a full OPC history on the car might be worth pushing for a bit of goodwill!

xx

Third gear problem you descibe is also common on S. Number of forum topics on here and in USA.

My car is five years old done 29K from new and third gear is only slightly easier now when cold than it was new. Nothing to worry about.

Try Ninemeister in Warrington, or Tech9 by Liverpool Airport - both should quote less than half that.

Chris at Tech9 used to be the master tech at mann island (porsche liverpool) - he has a different story to tell now he's not with the OPC
