Tightening the door straps

The ongoing work to tidy my S2 continues and now I want to tighten the door straps to stop the clicking noise that they make. The straps are held to the A pillar with two splined headed bolts. I don't have the right tool/bit at the moment so does anybody know what size tool/bit that I need so I can buy the right one. It looks like a 6mm to me, but I can't be sure.

Thanks

James

Not sure on the size but be very carful as they round out easily and also the captive bolt inside the pillar is prone to shearing off as well !!

I have the opposite problem, my door straps seem to have worn so they don't click and don't stay open half way. A pain the neck in tight car park spots trying to get out with one hand on the door to stop the wind blowing it into the door of the adjacent car.

And I have a different problem again [8D]

Both doors are stiff to both open and shut, as though they haven't been used enough? A bit of oil perhaps?

Thread hijack!

Just resurrecting this thread to tell you that the door check strap A pillar bolts take an M6 spline bit. And I can confirm that they do indeed round off easily.[]

Unfortunately, having now tightened them, I am still getting the annoying clicking noise, but I can now say for sure that it's coming from inside the door. So door card off at the weekend to investigate.

Aren't they supposed to make that noise? They spring into notches to hold the door open at several point through it's action?

Normally I would agree, but the passenger door is now as quiet as a mouse, and the driver's door still sounds like it is broken....

Mind you I will probably be spending time at the weekend trying to find the source of my oil leak, so the door may end up being a secondary job.

I went to tighten drivers door one as its a little loose and the captive nuts must be loose as they turn but dont tighten. Am I right to assume I will have to take wing off and weld them back, grr annoying, add it to list of small thigs up with mine. Random hero,am I right to assume this has happened to you, what did you do to sort it yourself.

the clicking was caused on my 944 by the allen bolts that hold the check strap to the door - after messing around for an age to tighten the m6 bolts into the chassis (if you remove the boot release switch and surrounding carpet i could access the 10mm nut at the back - i think someone drilled a hole to get to it) it still made the noise - one of the bolts was missing in the door side and the other very slack. now sorted
