Time for a change Boxster to 993?

Hi. thinking of changing my Boxster for a 993, just wondering what I should look out for. I've heard reliability isn't normally a problem but obviously with a car thats 18 ish years old ther will be some issues. Any advice would be appreciated.
 
i really enjoyed my 993 and will almost certainly get another when the time is right.for me anyway though,impossible to live with as a daily driver,for short journeys.
my ideal garage will have the new boxster s (which i drove last week and which is an awesome machine),and the 993 2S which i aim to get when settled in bournemouth ,with some free time to enjoy some windy bits.

the 993 I had was a super drive and with a great soundtrack,but needed about 5k of money spending on wear and tear items after 85k miles-corrosion around window scuttle,door stays.suspension bits and other corroded items-so if these havent been done then you should allow for it.
that said you will have a lot of fun-but jonas at JZM reckoned these cars are not really suitable as daily drives at their age-i know there are those here who do just that-that is just his advice and he knows his 911`s!!!

have fun just dont expect the modern mid engined experience of your boxster-it will be something far more special)imo)-but not on an everyday basis (for me)
 

I've used my 993 C4 as a daily drive for coming on for twelve years and every single mile has been special. Even when I worked just four or five miles from my house it was still good. I put winter tyres on it around the beginning of November every year and it has never failed to get me where I wanted to go, even in the deep snow of a couple of years ago.

It has done around 136,000 mmiles but still drives and looks good and I can't imagine not using it daily. I would not feel right ddriving to work in something else while it languished in the garage.

The Boxster is a good car without a doubt but my son would rather have my 993 than his 987


 
I agree with Clyde - I've used my 133K 993 C4 as a daily drive since I got it some 12 years ago - never let me down except for the failed camshaft a couple of weeks ago! When that's fixed it'll be back to being my daily drive and I wouldn't swap it for a boxster.

993's are fine as a daily drive and have way more personality of the more modern water cooled cars, only thing to consider is that you can get a fairly bomb proof 996TT for same money!

Have a look back through the postings a few months ago I posted a whole page on what to look for and their relative fixing costs, just remember the cars are 15 to 18 years old so there is potentially a lot of tired parts and yes you could spend £5k on any of them, the good news is if it aint broke it probably doesnt need fixing.

Basic common 993 faults are
- Check straps, doors clicking (should be fixed from behind i.e. no visible weld marks)
- Corrosion around bottom of screen and corners
- Cam cover leaking
- Air conditioning if fitted
- Accident damage look at seams in bonnet area

You need to do all the usual checks on brakes, clutch, suspension, wheels, tyres. Body wise, PU, lights, reflectors, dents, dings, do all the electrics work etc etc etc
 
I have had my 993 c2 for 20 months and it has been a real joy. I spent a lot of time reading the Jackals Forge website. This is very helpful site and details the issues you might face on a 993. When I bought my car I had the rear bumper removed to replace the bumper brackets and to check for corrosion on the chassis where the bumper brackets attach to the body. I also replaced the lower valve covers due to oil drips. I opted for aluminium covers from the US but in retrospect I would have fitted OE.
