Time for a new car.....

At least that's what I've been telling myself! My '01 2.7 is getting nearer to the dreaded 48k mark and at the last 12 month inspection in Nov I managed to incur a £500 bill on nothing in particular, then another grand at Camtune for new discs and pads all round, and to make matters worse, the thought of a bit of top down action during the glorious winter sunshine resulted in the dreaded "crack" and a split rear window.

The OPC have just quoted £3,500 including VAT but I think their calander must still be showing the 1st of April. I'm waiting for Camtune to respond and I'll give CE Moore's a call who have been recommended on here before.

So.... booked in a test drive for next Sat on a manual "S". Have already had a go in the 997 S (more for a laugh than anything else really) and the salesman basically said wait until you try the new Boxster and save yourself 25 grand. Will report after the weekend but I'm getting rather misty eyed about the thought of a spanking new S for the summer!

Bad news about the rear screen, my hood stays firmly closed until the weather picks up which is a real shame as there have been some great days recently. Oh for a glass rear screen.

Had a whirl in the new S in early Dec. Promptly went rummaging through my trousers afterwards, for my Credit Card of course. It took me another 2 weeks to decide on the colour though.

The new hood mechanism at below 30 is excellent. It's only a little thing, but makes a huge difference.

1k for new disk and pads? I replaced my own front disk and pads (no previous experience whatsoever, just used help from this forum), parts from Eurocarparts.com, and it cost me around £110 and took 1.5 hours total. £3,500 for a new roof? Go to Tower (Druid Street London - 0207-357-0911) I got my rear screen replaced for £300 cash (parts and labour) last summer and it's perfect. If London is too far away for you, there are others outside London charging £250 just doa search.
The 48k service shouldnt cost you more than around £550 at an OPC, thats how much it cost me.

But I am guessing that these are just excuses to go and get a new Boxster....in which case 'look into my eyes, look into my eyes, not around my eyes, look into my eyes......you will forget everything I have just told you...you will buy the new Boxster'.....

Thanks Rodney - got onto Tower who are 5 mins from where I live and who'll do it for £380 all in (will have to do the "cash haggle" at payment time).

Anyway..... was perusing the price list over a coldie last night and came up with:

Boxster S Manual
Metallic
Wind def
Xenons
Coloured crests
Climate
Sports seats
Sports steering wheel
Bose

£42,000 ish.

Going from a placcie window 2.7 to the new shape S should be a considerable step. The new shape 2.7 was looking to be around £38,000 by the time I'd stuck on a 6 speed box, 18" wheels and leather on top of the extras above - 4 grand seemed a tempting step.

Will report on the test drive next week.

Sound advice!

Disks and pads really are a doddle and you can get a new hood for less than £500

JCB..

Good find John!

I take it that is the earlier (unlined) hood?
(Just in case there is any confusion with owners of later cars)

Dealer rang me on Sat morning to say that the rear spoiler had seized on the demo and the workshop wouldn't allow it out (yeah like that would make a difference on the North Circular.....) so will have to report later on regarding the drive.

However, did a bit of researching..... If I were to replace my 01 2.7 with a glass rear window 986 S then I'd have to spend at least 35 grand at the OPC - maybe upto 38k. A facelift 996 comes in at around 45, so a new 987 S at 41 k seems like great value. There really doesn't seem to be much value in saving money by going for the old model when the new one is so much better and in reality only about 2 or 3 k more. Am I deluding myself?

Maybe a dodgy spoiler is the 987's new problem that will take forever to fix. It's the third one i've heard of in 6 weeks.

There appears to be a problem with the rear-spoilers on the demo cars - they make a terrible racket going up and down.
There is supposed to be a fix for this but they appear to be letting people test-drive with the noisy spoiler!

Don't understand why there is this common problem - I'm unaware of it ever happening to the "old" model. This really shouldn't be that different on the new ones? It's the same basic car...
