Time has come

Kevan, you may have more success looking for a car at Porsche specialists rather than the PCs, given that Gen2s could be up to 6 years old.

Pistonheads is always a good source of cars, both private and dealer sales.

Good luck!

Jeff

The time has came for me to sell my own Cayman S as I have decided to look for a suitable Gen2 replacement and the Gen1 will be a hard act to follow! It has over a year of transferable Porsche Assist Warranty on it so that is a good but little used by me feature of the sale, if anyone has a suitable Cayman S for sale or is interested in a good Gen1 ( 87,000mls )FPSH, lots of leather chrono etc get in touch, if I haven't moved on it will be at Althorp.

Having checked with Porsche Centres I have found very few available and only two which are tempting although one I saw is in Metallic Violet which I found a bit off putting. The other is in Belfast... but the search goes on, it's a funny thing at these times that I want to sell but to keep hold until I've found the replacement rather like buying and selling a house but then we're talking figures which are higher than my first house purchase!

Cameron sports cars have a decent enough black 2010 S for 29k. FPSH and all the kit you would want.

Thanks for that Jonathan I neglected to state that I'm looking for a PDK, well spec'd manuals do seem to be far more common

I tracked down my Gen2 Cayman S PDK and took ownership last Friday, overall I'm very pleased with it, it has PCM, PDK, PASM, Chrono, universal interface, Sports seats, sports wheel and paddle shift plus the comfort pack a really nice drive. Just one thing, with the trip computer and the PCM how do I stop it telling me in the trip computer that the navigation isn't set when I'd rather have other info there?

Come on Kevan, as Register Sec you know the score; pictures please!!

D

PS. You'll also need to change your avatar!

One on the Avatar Dave but I'll put some up on the new members, the car not me!

Well done on sourcing the car Kevan. As David has said, some pics and details would be good as well as your impressions compared with the Gen1.

Can't help with the trip/PCM issue I'm afraid.

Look forward to seeing the new steed at Althorp.

If it's anything like my gen 2 911, Kevan, which I suspect it is, then go to the menu on the trip computer using the stalk. Scroll down to the "set", select that and then " display". From memory you can then choose the default display in front of you. I think the options are something like radio/range/ nav and so on. If part only or none of this is right then it's my memory playing tricks again... In which case the manual might be your best bet[:(]

Thanks guys, I'll try as you suggest TSC, impressions so far Jeff are that it is schizophrenic, drive in normal mode and it can be sedate but responsive due to pedal pressure, switch into sport and it's a different character whether in auto or manual, as it says in the book Sport+ is for track so not to be used in traffic but when in traffic I just knock it into auto and toddle along coming clear of traffic I move the stick to the left drop down a few gears and go, PASM is good not such a hard ride as I had expected from comments I had read and the roll is negligible, in fact it feels flat whether it is on or off, sports exhaust sings loudly above 5000 and the red line comes up quickly although I've not had chance to find out how it is in high gears but 7 is for cruising hence in auto on Sport+ it's said not to operate but how many tracks would have long enough straights. We had a diversion a couple of nights ago and had to take to country roads, the dynamic lights where impressive, the only thing I need to find my way through is as I've said the trip computer and PCM interaction, once I have that sussed I'll be well at home. driving it is really enjoyable, I feel that the seats have improved slightly although it's probably just that they are newer with less use. I have in the past liked the button shift when driving PDK but this has paddle shift and is the first I've driven with it and I like that too although it is a pity that you can't shift up and down with both hands but then it's a more universal method. I did find when I first got it that I went for the clutch when the traffic suddenly stopped in front of me, boy did I stop quickly! Thankfully the car behind me was well back but I won't be doing that again! Two days after getting it I drove the girlfriends manual Qashqaui and had to remember to use the stick and clutch or I'd be washing the screen and such every time I wanted another gear for the first mile.

In short I love driving the Gen2 and PDK is terrific but it took me a few empty road miles to get the feel for it.

Kevan,

My car's a similar spec to yours, although it's a manual without SE but I have the LSD. I have to agree re PASM and PDLS and although SC makes it a different beast, I suspect that its features are more noticeable with PDK.

Enjoy the car.

Jeff

Jeff,

Like you I wanted the locking diff but it's a rarely taken up option and so with the options on this one I took it as it is which is substantial as it ticked far more boxes than most, traction is better than my Gen1 which was on Bridgestones whereas this is on Michelins, I would say road noise is slightly less but the tyres are the same size so I'll stay with Michelins, more expensive but I have my winter wheels which are Gen2 18" with Michelin Alpins, may as well stick with the brand, anyway got a feeling that the rears may wear out first.

Kevan,

With all the electronic jiggery-pokery to stop the wheels spinning I'm not sure that the locking diff is really necessary, particularly since it's not a very aggresssive device [some owners on P-9 seem to prefer after-market custom locking diffs]. Interestingly, I believe that Lotus aren't in favour of LSDs because they tend to induce understeer.

My Cayman came fitted with P Zeros, and although at 17k miles I'm on my third rear set [it's those track days!], the fronts are original with ~3mm tread depth remaining. The P Zeros are quite grippy - and road noise is reasonable considering the tyre size and profile and the sports suspension set-up - but maybe I'll get to the situation where I need to replace them all at the same time and try a different tyre.

Jeff

On my Gen 1 it originally had Continentals which while pretty good for grip and traction did wear relatively quickly, I had Pirelli P Zeros on my Boxster S before that which were impressive but broke away suddenly and wore well but having driven 981's shod with the later Pirellis they had much better grip than the earlier tyres so I can only presume that they are a softer compound and your wear rate seems to indicate so.

Congrats Kev.

Keep that left foot out of the way now !

Can't wait to see your car in the flesh.

I think the Michelin's will be quite durable, I've done 20000+ in them and they were originals when I bought the car nearly 3 years ago.

Probably will have to change next year as I don't want to have a degradation issue.

Their life expectancy should be good now that your commuting days are over (?)

Is there any spaces left on the register stand for my car at Althorp ?

If not I'll find you out on the Sunday.

Enjoy the Summer.

Cheers

Kev

20,000 on the rears too Kev? You're not driving hard enough..!

See you at Althorp on the Sunday. My Cayman's on the Register display - I've just received notification that I need to be in place by 8.00am, so it's going to be a long day.

Jeff

Ha ha Jeff !

I'm just bedding them in for a track day somewhere ! (Don't want to spoil their looks as my car won our regional concours a few weeks ago).

I'll see if Kev comes back with anything in the meantime.

See you at Althorp.

Kev
