Time to book a service, any recommendations?

Hello,

I was planning on taking the 930 in for a service some time back but hadnt got around to doing so. Only done about 350 miles since I purchased it.

Anyway, living in Swindon not too far from the M4 Junction 15, I am considering either getting the service carried out at our local Porsche centre, Autofarm or Bob Watson Engineering. The latter two being pretty close to me (around 35-40 miles). The good thing about Autofarm for me is the car collection if paying over £500.00 +VAT.

Our local Porsche centre are quoting £1100.00 +VAT for a 12,000 mile or add one hours labour to the above price for a 24,000 mile service.

The car has been serviced by its last owner by his local Porsche specialist but I have no service stamps for this in the book. I could probably get them easily enough. The last actual stamp in the book shows it was serviced about 8,500 miles ago but this was back in 2002 (as I said the car has been serviced regularly since then and now shows 79,000).

Does anyone have a preference as to who is likely to offer good rates and top service. Also, am I best going for a 12 or 24,000 mile service if the costs involved are pretty similar. Maybe someone can recommend someone I havent listed above?

Cheers,
Chris

I live in Swindon, haved used opc there, are okay. I think the best guys to take the car to are Steve Bull in Devizes. Porsche spealists. Believe Steve was in lovetts for many moons before setting up on himself. I have used him and is 1st class. A good pair of guys there. There phone no is - was anyhow 01380 725444. They are at unit 1, plot 1A Hopton Industrial estate, London Road, Devizes, all the best.

If you take the car there & I have a day off or something I maybe able to run up with you - give a lift back if needs be.

I have dealt with Bob Watson and have heard only good reports from others. He is technical adviser to PCGB for turbos.

I haven't had any dealings with Bob Watson other than a few telephone calls but given reputation and his support of PCGB, he'd be my first port of call for a 930 if I lived close by.

Oil changes and fluid changes are recommended every two years whether the car has covered the miles or not.

Major service on a 930 is the pricey one but no more than £600 for the basic service.

Minor service is an oil change and health check and shouldn't cost more than a few hundred pounds depending on the oil.

All I have ever heard about Bob Watson is good feedback but have not used them personally. As far as Autfarm is concerned I would stay well clear and this is from previous very costly experience, the less said the better.......

Im having my front diff done at bob watson enginering in a few weeks time. I was very impressed with his set up there, and seemed like a very nice bloke to do business with. I only hear good things.

The service centre I have always used is Peter Tognola in Datchet (nr Slough), if that is too far then what about Ray Northway (west of Reading), both have good reputations with older cars.

What about Porschembri near Hearthrow thinking about them or JZ for work on my 930 when it needs it any good either of them .

dont think a main dealer would know what a 930 is... probably think you are talking about the time........
then they will throw a 'technician' on it who they have just started ,after working in the ford dealers for a year......
£1100 + vat ...may as well give it to charity........(sorry if it sounds harsh its been a long day at the office!)

id plump for bob watson if hes local...think hes been the club advisor on turbos for years.....now where did i put the little porschefile book they keep sending with the mag? check yours and see if im right cheers

Given your location, and the fact that it's a 930, I'd go with Bob Watson.
He knows his 930s inside out, and knows what to look for in cars of a certain age, irrespective of prior service history..... and yes, I am biased!
