Time to spend some more money - Advice?

Now that the 944 is on the road I've a few issues to address.

First is oil and filter. Full synthetic? of which type and how much, and where to source a filter.

Belts, It's been stood for two years and I won't be happy until they're changed. Again, best place to buy and should I DIY?

Tyres and allignment, I'm looking at Avons at around £60 a corner. Is the allignment on all four wheels expensive?

Filter easily available from GSF for about a fiver. I used fully synthetic on mine, 15w50. I wouldn't use anything thinner on an older-type engine. Castrol Magnatec semi-sythetic seems to be a good choice for the 944.

Belts you'll need to get from an indy, no reason why you can't DIY but the Lux does not have the easier tensioner that's on the S2 so you should really use the tensioner tool, however the tension on mine (S2) set with the tool was exactly the same as by the quarter-turn feel.

Alignment can just be done by a tyre place, it doesn't need to be a KDS type.

Thanks,

Also looks like I need an oil seal, its coming from around the distributor area?

I have ordered the belts and once they arrive I will be attempting this myself (i also have the tensioning tool coming from Aarnworx)

[:D]

Don't forget that the Club have two tensioning tools available for loan to members!

good idea to do the belts, however if you're going to do them then there are a few jobs you should consider while your in there.

1. Idlers
2. water pump.
3. any of the front oil seals (crank, balance shaft) that may be leaking

I'd also strongly recommend that you replace your balance shaft belt as well if your not already planning on doing so. Its often forgotten about and it's failure often leads to the failure of the timing belt. Not worth doing really for the cost of the belt.

its expensive if you buy in the UK, they are a little cheeper from the US [:D]

I needed to get my own belt tensioning tools as soon I hope to be moving to spain, and I think i want to keep the 944, or get another for a runabout in spain its a good investment.

Isn't the water pump quite expensive?

Yes. But, so was paying to have my belts done again after 5k miles because there was a weeping oil seal.

I guess it's down to how long you want to keep the car? I'd suggest doing the whole lot if it's not been documented as having had the work done in the last few years. With the sort of mileage these cars do it might be a once-in-ownership expense that will give you peace of mind.
