time to supersize, but what offset works ??

thought I would finally take the plunge and supersize up to 18" alloys from the highly controversial 18" OEM Targa alloys....

what I am unsure is the offset position on the rear..

seen replica's and OEM alloys all with varing rear offsets..

fronts all seem to be ET 52
and the rears I though would be / should be ? ET 65

but have seem OEM's at ET 40 and Replicas at ET 47...

to be honest not really sure.. what is on the current 17" (handbook in german remember ! so if it was in there I wouldn't know!)

any ideas what fits the narrow bodied 993 for a 18" set up ?

regards

cheers Will !

post editied as I missed my actual question ! damn my typing !!

what 18" set up works on the NB 993 !

If nobody has answered by tomorrow morning I can look in the drivers manual which gives the size and offset for the OEM 18" Turbo Twists for a NB 993. I also have the Tequipment brochure which gives the 996 18" 2002 five spokes which also fit a NB 993.

Ian.

cheers for the responses.....

I've seen a lot (rather) the majority of US Tarag owners supersizing....

part of the reason, is also for better on track perforamce and looks but the OEM's are looking tired after 90k+ miles....

although I fear that my local Ostepath will be racking up the £'s from another London Porsche owner suffering from those roads !

tyres.. 225/40/18 up front obviously but on the rears I am only going up to 265/35/18 rather than the lower 285/30/18 for the reason of ride comfort on my old springs and the economies of 30 profile tyres....

been searching the net to no avail...... lots of std info, worth trying an OPC part dept ?

but with the 18" sets that I have seem on the rears being ET 40 or ET 47 (must be the WB) it's a tad confusing...

Sundeep.

For a narrow body 993 (eg C2, C4 and Targa) the Porsche recommended specifications for 18" wheels are

Front : 8J x 18 ET 52 fitted with 225/40 ZR 18
Rear : 10J x 18 ET 65 fitted with 265/35 ZR 18

The rears with ET 40 will not fit as they are for the wide body versions of the car.

You can also fit 996 wheels, such as the 2002 five spokes, which have specifications as follows

Front : 8J x 18 ET 50 fitted with 225/40 ZR 18
Rear : 10J x 18 ET 65 fitted with 265/35 ZR 18 or 285/30 ZR 18

I would stick to the recommended 265/35 on the rear but 285/30 will fit. The fronts have a 2mm offset difference to recomended (they stick out 2mm extra) but fit with no rubbing. Maurice is correct in that 18" wheels are recomended for the Coupe only so not for Targa or Cabriolet. In the manual it has Coupe only underlined.

Ian.

cheers Ian !

as for 18's on the Targa, a fair amount of Rennlist Targa owners have done it without any issues.. which has convinced me to supersize... but I did incorrectly believe a steering rack upgrade was needed to supersize but it turns out that was only was up to MY95

Anytime Sundeep.

BTW refurbished Targa wheels do look very nice. The previous owner of my Targa had it done including replacing the black bolts with stainless steel which I think looks much better. Mind you I don't think they are cheap to get done and you have to use somebody who knows about these wheels.

What are you thinking about getting - hollow spoke 993 Turbo Twists, 996 2002 five spokes or something completely different?

Ian.

I actually do like the look for the OEM Targa wheels.. but all the bolts need a major refurb !

but 18's are the way to go and not just on looks.... as I do track now and again, they would be useful !

as for what type.. if only the MkII GT3 wheels fitted.. even in the right size the offsets don't work (option on US 996 Turbos !) a chap in the US has them and they looks totally amazing !!!!

Twists or RS's it will have to be, as I want to keep the Porsche look.....

That's why I was happy mine had been replaced with stainless steel bolts. Three years after they were done the bolts still look perfect. The black ones seem to start corroding very quickly.

BTW The 996 18" SportDesign wheels are similar to the picture you show as they are a 10 spoke wheel. They come in a version with the offsets I gave above that will fit the 993 NB. I am sure you could find some to look at either from a local 996 owner with them or see some at a dealers.

Ian.

Hi Sundeep
There was a gentleman doing the Midland hillclimb championship in a standard RHD 993 RS in speed yellow onto which he had fitted MK2 GT3 alloys in 2003. They were a tight squeeze but RS obvviously runs reduced ride height compared to Targa so they should fit. Car looked excellent ! These wheels come in two different offsets I think, one to suit GT3 one to suit GT2. I run Cargraphic 3 piece wheels on my RS Rear Offset ET 52 10x18 with 265/35 18. Front ET46 8 1/2 X 18 with 225/40 18. Rears have never tyres have never touched (fronts catch on arch liners on full lock)
PS I have a set of nearly new tyres in the above size if you are interested (coming down to Birmingham tomorrow:)

Hi sundeep
Check out the Veoce gt1 wheels in this rennlist link

http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=153323&highlight=veloce+gt1

They're a lot lighter than the OEMs and I've had no problems witrh them on my 96 targa. The "deep dish" look is nice and they're made specifically for the 993 b Team Dynamics

Ian.. having had a look this weekend, I'm tempted to replace the bolts myself.. as it would appear to be just the bolt & screw.. I hope ?

Any clues to what I would need...... or how to get / where to get the bits ?

regards

Sorry no clue as it was done by the previous owner. No receipts for the job. Not sure I would trust myself doing wheels as a DIY. You have to get them all torqued correctly and I assume use threadlock. There is also rubber gaskets I think between the 3 pieces.

I assume the OPC price was about £1400 plus tires for a set as that seems to be the going price for a set of new OEM wheels. You could always try looking for a refurbished 2nd hand pair from one of the refirbishment companies.

Ian.

Special tool required to fit bolt head, then there is the question of the rubber seal. You may also damage the threads on the bolts, stretching them, which in none technical parlance is not good.

You would be cheaper picking up a 2nd hand set that have been refurbished properly already.

There was an article last year in 911 and Porsche World about one person refurbing his wheels and as far as I can remember it created a bit of a stramash over safety issues.

8,0J x 18 ET 47 front 10,0J x 18 ET 52 work quite well - if you like the gemballa lemans wheels (one piece polished outer rim and take standard porsche centres) - i may know where there is a set going cheap (not mine!) http://www.gemballa.com/Images1/Teile/Felgen/big/glm18_big.jpg

in regards to the targa splits - relatively easy to have a go yourself - new bolts are a must as is the use of sealant.

do a quick search on rennlist forum - i posted a link there re bolts cheap from germany whn i was looking into refurbing a set of rs splits
