Can anyone tell me if there is a belt or chain on my 97 2.5 boxsrter. And what mileage it needs to be changed. if it breaks what damage is caused, is it he usual valve damage ect. my car has done 81,000 and am not sure if or when it was done.

It's a chain, and it does not need to be changed (it's actually internal to the block)..
There is an accessory belt that needs changing at 48K miles, but this is just for the alternator, air-con etc. It's fairly easy to do.

Boxster Jan 00 with less than 30000 miles on the clock.

I changed the belt a few weeks ago. Porsche say every 48000 miles but when you buy a new belt there is a date limit on it. This means to me that it is also related to age and not only mileage. If I recall it is either 4 or 5 years. The change of belt made a differentce as the old one was slipping a bit, besides better be safe than sorry. It is easy to change but first you have to take the near side seat off, bits of carpets behind the seat then the actual trap (torx screws for the seat). Cannot not give you the info now as I am not at home, sry.
