Timing belt near miss

Put my S in for a belt service yesterday, spoke to the garage today and learnt that I've been very lucky. Apparently, something had moved and begun to score a groove in the belt. Also, at least one tooth had fallen off the timing belt, which fits with my theory (as commented on in other threads) that it isn't always that the belt snaps but that the rubber teeth fall off.

It has been 18K miles and 3.5years since the last belt change. This thread may have had a different title if I'd left it much longer. If anyone else has the same sort of time/mileage on their belt then I would recommend getting it replaced.

Bullet dodged.....this time.

I knew a 944 owner who's balance belt snapped the car ran lumpy for a bit then when bang when the balance belt caught in the cam belt and dragged it off !!!

Hi Neil,

Your a very lucky person indeed :), as you may have read mine had probably covered approximately 30k miles in three years and has snapped :( Just got off the phone to the garage, hopefully get her back mid-week towards end of week next week [8D]. I had 3 valves replaced and all valve stem seals as well so hopefully a little bit of an increase towards the original power output.

Regards

Dave K.
