A warning light/message appears if the fluid level is low … it can be amber (‘please refill”) or red ("stop driving”)… what I didn’t realise is that the colour is not is not guided different by different fluid levels (low vs very low), but by the temperature of the engine when the warning appears. Above 60 deg it goes straight to red (skipping the amber entirely).. the idea being that the coolant level has dropped rapidly and there must be a big problem (most likely it’s the pipe on the water pump outlet…). The lack of an amber warning had me puzzled, so I thought it might be useful to post.
