Tip Selector

Hi - I was on the way into town this morning and pulled in for some fuel. Got back into the car - it's in "p" but the engine would not turn over at all. All the dash lights are on etc. Try a few more times and it eventually fires up.
I decided not to carry on so went back home.
Tried to re start and the same thing happened - I moved the lever from "p" to "n" and the car fires up fine. A few moments later it fires up in"p"!!!!!
I am wondering if it's a micro switch or faulty connection.
Any help much appreciated
Cheers
Steve

Sounds like it might be the multi-function switch on the gear selector. On a pre-facelift car this is mounted on the side of the gearbox, and on a facelift car it is on the bottom of the gear lever. The early ones tended to be more problematic that the later ones, as the contacts inside the switch can break up. (Ask me how I know). You can read the switch positions with a Porsche tester, so it would be best to get it checked out that way.

Hi Richard - on behalf of all of us 996's - please put off getting a 997 for at least a couple of years.
I have booked it into the garage that sold me the car.
I am assuming that it's still OK to drive the car as it starts in the "n" position first time.
Many thanks for all of your help.
regards
Steve

I think you will be OK until you can get it looked at. Depending on the model, and the exact fault, it may have registered a fault code in the tiptronic control module. Anyway, they should be able to diagnose it fairly easily.

I think I'll be hanging around here for a while. Much as a 997T is tempting, I really don't want to part with £25-30k to upgrade right now! Another couple of years, should see the differential come down to a level where I wouldn't end up in the divorce court. [:)]

Those words could have been mine Richard I'll be staying put for the forseeable future too[;)]
