tips on finding a good local mechanic

Hello everybody, just bought my first ever Porsche, a fairly cheap 928 (sharp intakes of breath all round) and am looking for recommendations from anyone who knows a good, reasonable Porsche mechanic in the Cambridge area because I'm probably going to need one.
Thanks in advance, Toady

Hello everybody, just bought my first ever Porsche,

Hi and welcome to Porsche ownership. Lets hope that you don't need to find a indi to quickly (other than for service requirements)
I guess the best thing to do is to come along to the Region 24 Cambs and Beds Regional meeting which is held on the second Wednesday of every month at the Old Ferryboat Hollywell near St Ives. At the meeting you will find members from around the Regional area who have a variety of cars and interests. All our members have a need for service and will be able to point you in the right direction.
Look forward to seeing you and your car at the Ferryboat on the 13th Aug .

dear mr toad ..

i am unable to make the meeting, but am interested in your post ..
could you kindly place a post of any good porsche mechanics in the cambridge area for all to share ..

thanks ..

sorry but having just parted with my early 928 I'm afraid there was a sharp intake of breath lol[:D]

worth taking a look through the info links at the head of the 928 forum entitled fuse and relay . Great for a rainy Sunday afternoon.
welcome anyway ,hope you are loving that lovely burble of the big V8 even if your neighbour's arn't

reasonable Porsche mechanic in the Cambridge

What I should have told you was that the OPC at Cambridge now have a Fixed price menu servicing for older cars.
This would include your 928. I did hand out some brochures given to me by the OPC manager - Gary Sorrell.
I will be bringing these to next club night so just ask me for a copy. These prices for OPC service compare very well with
all the indi dealers plus you would have the satisfaction of knowing they are using genuine parts.
More on this and model types in next Porsche Post.

See you on club night.

There is a specialist garage in Milton on a industrial park but I forget the name. I haven't used them but haven't heard anything bad about them either which is a +

specialist garage in Milton

I think the garage you are refering to is called BARTECH. This is run by two Italian brothers - Nino and Tino.
I have had paint done and they did a super job - (Nino does the paint and Tino run the Mechs/Tech side)
Like you I have heard nothing but praise for them. They are on the Cowley Road Indurstrial area (go past the
park and ride turn left and next right and BARTECH are on your left) Phone 01223 425300.

My first service (for me) is due this month on the 944 S2 and I was considering TWG Motorsport in Peterborough - it was recommended by someone on the forum. However, Cambridge is much more convenient for me, so OPC at Cambridge sounds like a good bet. I hadn't realized they even catered for older cars.

When and where is the next club night?

Dave - Club nights are held on the second Wednesday of each month. Almost on your doorstep.
The Old Ferryboat at Hollywell is the venue - park round the side and we have our own meeting room.
I will have some flyers with me for the fixed menu pricing for the OPC so just ask for one.

I agree Auto 2000 in kempston is very good! I have used them a couple of times and they are a good bunch of blokes, they know what they are doing, reasonably priced too, which helps[:D]!

There is a guy in milton just after the cambridge evening news turning, which is near milton industrial estate. His driveway is jam packed with 928's, and he definatly works on them mechanically. Now im pretty sure it a business, and I always see him working on them every saturday, as my shop is in milton. Im sure he would be able to help you out with anything 928, whether it mechanical or just info. like I said the first house on the right, after the cambridge evening news turn.

Yep, that's them. They worked on a friends 928 once and he was pleased,

Dongaway,
Now that's funny. The friend I mentioned above that had work done on his 928 lives there. They are all his cars, he's greedy! He is very knowledgable on 928's and races one in the open series. It's thanks to him I got the Porsche bug... The chap working on the cars is his friend, he may well offer to help you out. I'm going to PM mr toad my friends email address.

Hey everybody, thanks very much for these helpful pointers, I think I'll check out the guy in Milton cos it's on my doorstep but I do like the sound of Auto 2000 especially after speaking to Twinny at the club meet last night.
And with regards to the club meet, it was great and everbody was very friendly which is always helpful when you're a newbie.
Looking forward to next month, a dry evening and my car starting (battery)!!!

don't discount any local specialist sports car techs . I use one in the next town who is brilliant. 30 years experience does all the work himself on all the sportscars they get in,ie TVR Porsche Ferrari seen everything in there . He's cheap and honest .Lets face it a 944 is hardly rocket science[;)]

The nearest Porsche specialist oem or otherwise is a 110 mile round trip in both directions which just isn't an option if you are a single working chap like me .
