Its me again after more advice!! I am looking at a nice 1990 964 Targa with 85k on the clock with the auto/tip box. Are these gearboxes reliable? anything I should look for when driving? Thanks again in advance...

Driving tips now for 16 years - also a sport version - I never had a problem. You can´t break a tip gearbox.

I have had a tip since April and done 12000 miles. I wasn't sure at first, but the sage advice of "buy on condition" convinced me. Since owning the car I have come to like the tip box.

Interestingly if you really stamp on the go pedal it will drop two gears and take you into the kind of rev range that you might not have the confidence to do if you were changing manually - obviously then you do zip past things like they are standing still - lovely

Not a great fan of Tiptronic, although my wife has had it on a 964 Cab, 993 Cab and 996 Coupe. However, even she has now reverted to 6-spd manual (987S). IMO the Tip compromises control and throttle response, and yet the manual transmissions are so good, particularly on the later cars.

But, being torque convertor technology, the Tip system should be very reliable (although 964s were first generation) and I'm not aware of any problems other than the occasional electronic gremlins. We once had a juddering upchange, and this was rectified by Porsche by using a higher quality synthetic auto-gearbox oil. Mind you it was expensive - £100!!! (under warranty).

One advantage of a Tip, being an auto, it is less likely to have been thrashed. The gearbox will have controlled the engine speed. So no over-revving through missed gear selections.
