Tiptronic flappy paddle conversion

I once sold a car with the after market wheel which has the paddles (not the conversion). I'm not sure whether it was a better driving experience, over just using the buttons.
The extra padding on the steering wheel was nice though.

I purchased an aftermarket wheel from FVD that had paddles built-in (i.e. not a conversion). One of the best modifications I've made TBH. If you are a 'manual' guy this really makes a tactile difference and brings the Tiptronic alive - those switches were just awful. I now never use Drive, always Manual.

Found a phone number on their face book page 079 43 311 332 and Darren replied to say that they are still around. they offer a 4 hour while you wait service or a send me your wheel service.

This is a great conversion for a 996 and I decided to do it myself on my 996Turbo. I purchased the paddles from Mercedes £148 (they are AMG C63 paddles) and it took me a couple of hours with a Dremel to make the cut out in the tiptronic wheel. I also disabled the buttons and repainted them to hide the + and - signs. It really wasn't that difficult.

I had originally planned to use a manual steering wheel but couldn't find one in Boxter red so converted my tiptronic wheel. I did buy a manual steering wheel which I think is Savanna and was thinking of changing the colour but decided against. That wheel is available if you would like it.

This really is a very easy and worthwhile conversion.

I take my hat off to a very clever person!! My wife has explained to me many times that my ability is outstripped by my aspirations many times, so in this case, i would rather have an expert who can do the job, do it.

that way, if she says she doesn't like it, I can agree and be blameless [8D]

(secret to a happy life....yes dear!![:)]

For what its worth Edition9 do a very good job - I have seen a couple of examples of their work and by all accounts their turnaround is pretty quick. You won't regret it.

Would you mind sharing the cost of the re-upholstery of the wheel? I did find someone who would do it but a long lead time and very expensive so I scrapped the idea. As 'boxter red' wheels don't seem to come up very often I would be interested in having my manual wheel re-upholstered and I would then switch the paddles to that wheel and get rid of the buttons altogether. I can use my existing airbag which is the correct colour.

Tykes,
I'm not sure what it would be, assuming you just want to upholster the rim, as my work is a bit more comprehensive and is also tied in with some other leather refurbishment to the interior. Also I would assume you would need to do the work AFTER you get rid of the buttons - I imagine he would need to build up the area where the buttons are before upholstering - but I may be wrong.
The website is http://www.designls.co.uk with his contact details, and the guy's name is Linas.
If he is relatively local to you I know he should be quite reasonable if you are delivering the wheel to him! as I am. Otherwise I will be seeing him on Tuesday and will have a word and report back.

Had a day trip to sunny Bolton today to meet up with the lovely Darren of Edition9.

Conversion to very nice Mercedes solid alloy flappy paddies done in about 2 hours. Very professional look and feel. I am super happy with the functionality, feel and look of the conversion and recommend it to anyone. I chose to ask Darren to disable the original buttons as I found that sometimes when I was turning the wheel I was catching the button and inadvertently changing gear.
