Tiptronic issues

My 1998 C2 went to main dealer for a change of the automatic transmission fluid and filter. On collecting it I noticed the selector was flashing between "4" and "D". It was immediately taken back into the workshop and reset. Tiptronic then worked perfectly for the next 200 miles until it then did the same and would only change between 1 - 4 gears and not manually, also bit rough particularly putting in reverse. I understand this is standard selector flashing when something wrong with the transmission and it goes into "limp home " mode.
Went back to dealer today and they have diagnosed something going wrong with the multi switch/sensor on gearbox and needs replacing. I can accept that its old (114k miles) and things go wrong but seems a bit coincidental with the ATF change - but they wouldn't have touched the sensor doing the fluid/filter change. Does anyone have any thoughts on it before the work is done? Thanks.

Our '03 had something similar last year which ended up being dirt in a switch.

Probably down to the cleaning before they did the ATF change, it does seem to accumulate

mud quite easily.

Removed, cleaned and replaced and it's been fine ever since, no charge from Autostrasse Coggeshall.

The multi-function switch, especially on the 3.4 cars with ZF transmission, is prone to the contacts breaking up inside. (Ask me how I know). I'm assuming they checked the plug/socket connection and the linkage, as they can also cause problems. The switch is nowhere near the drain/fill points. The MFS on the 3.6 with Mercedes box is on the bottom of the selector lever in the cabin. A much more sensible place for it, but it isn't unheard of for them to fail too.

Thanks for the thoughts. Main Porsche dealer so should know what they are doing but will give me something to talk to them about before they simply replace.
