Tiptronic Issues

I have a 1998 996 C2 Tiptronic, which at some time in the past has had a Mercedes box fitted. I'm finding that, after about 60 miles on track days, the downshift becomes reluctant or sluggish. Sometimes, when accelerating hard in 2nd, it locks in gear - sometimes 2nd, sometimes 4th with M and 4 flickering on the dashboard display. Anyone else had this experience? Is it likely to be the box or the controller? Alan T

Are you sure it is a Mercedes box? 1998 cars were fitted with a ZF box - the MB box was introduced for the MY2002 facelift. There are so many different parts used, that I would be surprised if someone had retrofitted one. Apart from the gearbox, there is the linkage, lever, controller, and quite a bit of re-wiring. Also, the DME (engine ECU) would probably struggle to communicate with the Tiptronic controller. Not saying it is impossible, but it would be a nightmare for anyone to troubleshoot. Best bet is to get it plugged in to a Porsche tester, and see what it shows up.
