Tiptronic issues

Tiptronic box previously fine.

Now have a lot of difficulty engaging reverse from park when cold.
Will not go into reverse without a lot of effort and then a fair bit of a clunking noise.

The box is fine in all other positions/selections (manual and auto) apart from changing from park to reverse [and can feel the transmission engaging when select 1st at a standstill].

Car is a 987 Boxster 2.7 with 21k miles and has been looked after.

Is it better to take to an OPC for diagnosis, Indy or autobox specialist for a diagnosis?

Any suggestions re best indy or autobox specialist near Glasgow greatly appreciated
Thanks
Neil

Gordon Campbell had his GT3 RS at OPC for weeks for gear box issues and it turns out after several attempts by them to sort it out it was sub contracted the work out to Strathclyde gearboxes Richmond Pl Rutherglen
0141 647 0534
Would give them a call and ask advise
I also have a 987 2.7 tip and have found at times when engine is cold on start up selecting reverse is hard almost to the point of forcing it into reverse from park.once warmed up no issues

Ha!, I just had my cable selector mechanism replaced at not inconsiderable expense, apparently due to something corroding in the gubbins and making it impossible for the selector to move. The only movement after that happens is in your trousers, as the stealer deftly removes several hundred pounds from your pocket. (I'll post the price later, invoice is RIP in the office)

This could be the same thing, as my mechanism was clunky then difficult too. Have it checked out. From what I was told the centre console was removed to get at the linkage.
If you have a gander at the workshop manual, freely available as PDF, you'll see what a complex little set up it is.

Don't be caught out - get a warranty asap, get breakdown cover if you don't have it, and be prepared to wait weeks for the "right part" to be sent from the Front - I mean, factory - in der Fatherland. Apparently the necessary widget is on permanent back order, wonder why?

Better still, go into your stealership and pretend it has already broken down and ask that they think has happened - if they tell you "it's a common problem" pretend to be surprised.

See my post on the Boxster forum on 05/05/09.

P996.426.035.00 012927 / Fastening Par(Bar?) - £8.52 (note the 996 designation - could it be that by using an old part design (996) they are causing the problem by not updating it??)

There it is, Grand Total of £454.56 + VAT = £522.74.

I didn't have a warranty but on researching it would have cost as much and would have covered this. I fully intend to buy a warranty (info posted elsewhere on the forum - http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/fb.asp?m=414433) in due course.

Hope all this helps.

Wow - some of the guys taking some heavy hits courtesy of the OPCs.

I saw your post this morning - just before going to Shotts to collect my 986 Tip from Peter McAnna at Motortune. I mentioned your post to him, but by that time I think you had already been in touch. I believe that he may have mentioned my car to you, and also the the 996 Tip which is also awaiting attention for a similar problem.

The symptoms which I suffered were similar to yours. The gear selector became progressively heavier to move and the vehicle became reluctant to select Park properly. Park was being selected (the wheels were locked and the ignition key could be removed) but the dashboard indicators disagreed. The issue was exacerbated when the engine and 'box were hot. Finally something parted company and the gear selector could move freely back and forth, apparently disconnected from the 'box.

Peter mentioned that occasional use may be part of the cause - and indeed my car has been used far less this year than in previous years due to business travel. I'll remind him to lubricate the gear rod and the linkage each time the car is in for a service from now on.

Anyway, what had happened was that the lever at the back of the 'box had become stiffer and stiffer due to a lack of lubrication. Eventually it became very stiff to move and instead the plastic fitting on the end of the gear rod had snapped off, meaning that the gear rod would no longer move. Replacing it involved a new gear rod at £24 (the same price for the part as akwaugh) plus £90 labour. At the same time Peter tidied up a couple of very minor niggles. The part was ordered on Thursday and delivered to him yesterday (Monday) although he did mention that it was on back order.

I thoroughly recommend Peter's work. He is one of only two garage businesses which I trust (and the other guy I have known since I was 10 years old.) Peter's always honest, straightforward, practical and economical. I wouldn't take my 986 anywhere else in central Scotland.

Best of luck getting this repaired - and i hope the better weather returns soon for us both (I've missed the past two sunny weekends with the car laid up.)
