Tiptronic not going into park easily

Hi all,

Committed the cardinal sin of taking my beloved to a non OPC or specialist last week to do a minor bit of paint and to change the oil / filter as its been laid up for over a year. I thought they cant mess that up. #FAIL

Apart from the issues with the paint initial, now sorted, the car stubbornly refuses to go into park from reverse without a struggle - I feel I have to wiggle the leaver and kind of force it a little to go in. Its a very different feeling to when the foot is not on the brake so I dont think its anything to do with a micro switch as I can get it out of park OK.

I have had the car for 9 years and not a sniff of a problem like this.

I fear that whilst trying to move the car they have manhandled the gear leaver but thats a guess, an educated one though.

Anyone had anything similar or ideas?

Thanks in advance and its great to have it back on the road after so long :)

I would check the linkage at the gearbox end, where the cable attaches to the multi-function switch. The MFS switch can also be a bit fragile, and the contacts break up inside and jam. Maybe disconnect the cable end at the MFS and see if it frees up the selector.

I would bow to Richard's wealth of knowledge ....but i had the same symptoms with my 06 987 and had to get a new switch fitted £360 at the OPC hopefully try Richard's solution first.

Guys,

Thanks for the reply but when your referring to the MFS - is this the one that senses if the footbrake is on?

If so, I dont think thats the case as the feel is very different. Have tried to put it in park without the footbrake on and it wont go.

Richard - as ever your a goldmine of info and diagrams, do you have a diagram for this bit?

Could it be within the gear selector leaver by chance? I just think someone forced it somehow :(

No, I don't mean the brake pedal switch. The MFS (multi-function switch) is on the side of the gearbox, connected by a cable to the gear selector in the car. If the switch or linkage are sticky you will feel it on the selector lever. If you could disconnect the cable at the MFS, it would tell you if the problem is in the selector or switch.

I'll see if I can find a diagram when I get to my PC tomorrow.

Not brilliant, but it will at least show you what you are looking for. It is mounted on the driver's side of the box.
