Tiptronic Problem

On Tuesday joining the M40, the transmission made a clunk as I moved off from the lights and as I accelerated down the slip road the instrument cluster flashes Tiptronic Emergency Run Mode and the transmission stuck in 2nd gear. Pulled over and consulted the handbook which says switch off wait 10 seconds and then star up. This allows the use of 2nd gear and reverse! As I had over 80 miles to drive I contacthed my OPC and was advised not to drive and have the car recovered to them. This was done after waiting 2 1/4 hours on the hard shoulder.

Got a call yesterday from the OPC to tell me that they have interrogated the computer for faults and that it records the trasmission being in emergency run which has now cleared and no other faults were logged. They requested permission to drive the car for an extended test and have covered 200 miles. The situation now is that the fault has not returned and they have no ideas what caused the problem ! Suggestion being that I should take the car back and pretend it never happened. As I plan to takr the car to Italy next month I am extremely nervous about being stranded in France or Italy.

Anyone had similar experience or have any suggestions as to how I should handle the OPC.

Thanks for any advise.

Do you have the Porsche Extended Warranty? If so, that includes Europe Wide Porsche Assist which should cover you for the trip.
I've never heard of such a glitch with the tiptronic box, and it does seem like a glitch and nothing more. The 'tip box is very reliable.
If it happens again, I'd disconnect the battery and reconnect (remembering all your codes).

Rodney,
Yes I do have the European Assist but the other half is not at all keen on the idea of being stuck in some remote part of Italy. Perhaps a trip to Germany would be a better option ! With hindsight I should have disconnected the battery but stuck on the hard shoulder with traffic thundering past is not condusive to clear thinking. I did try restarting the car a few times but the fault kept returning. Oh well, just wait and see if Porsche Tech in Germany have any ideas but I am not hopeful they will have an answer.
Thanks for your response.

You shouldn't have told her[8D], I forsee a stressful time ahead unless something is done before you leave.
Call some indies like Hartech or JZM or JAZ and ask their advice over the phone, they may have some experience of the severity of the problem and may be able to put your mind at ease.

I understand your dilemma Seamus. As Rodney says, the tip boxes are generally very reliable, so I expect it was just a glitch. Possibly a sticky solenoid valve (in the box), or maybe a bad contact on the multi-function switch (at the bottom of the gear lever on your car). Depending on your mileage, maybe consider a fluid and filter change - not cheap, but it might give some peace of mind. I changed mine early (not due until 96000) and found it made the changes slightly smoother - the old fluid was as black as your hat.

Hi Richard,

I checked with the garage, there's nothing showing in the diagnostics. The transmission is out and waiting for a specialist to look at it. The thinking is still that it's the oil pump or torque converter.

If you were on the A34 might I speculate that its in with Newbury Transmissions? They are the guys for this type of thing. I will be needing a gearbox rebuild myself (soon) - not that I am worried, but I took out AA breakdown and recovery this year for the first time in ages!

Hope yours gets well soon

Thanks for you reply Jules. The gearbox is up with SVP in Worcestershire but they've got someone they know in to repair it. The oil pump has gone and the main clutch basket is hanging by a thread so they're being replaced with new friction pads too. I should be back on the road next week.
