Tiptronic Problem

I broke down for the first time in 5.5 years of 996 ownership yesterday. I was happily cruising down the A34 when I lost all drive. It's like it went into neutral. Select Drive, Manual or reverse and it's basically neutral. Park works. There are no strange noises and no warning lights. The garage report that the diagnostics say there's no input drive to the 'box so some kind of torque converter issue? Do they break? The engine was recently out, which feels like rather a big coincidence. Anyone any ideas?

Hi Richard,

I checked with the garage, there's nothing showing in the diagnostics. The transmission is out and waiting for a specialist to look at it. The thinking is still that it's the oil pump or torque converter.

If you were on the A34 might I speculate that its in with Newbury Transmissions? They are the guys for this type of thing. I will be needing a gearbox rebuild myself (soon) - not that I am worried, but I took out AA breakdown and recovery this year for the first time in ages!

Hope yours gets well soon

Thanks for you reply Jules. The gearbox is up with SVP in Worcestershire but they've got someone they know in to repair it. The oil pump has gone and the main clutch basket is hanging by a thread so they're being replaced with new friction pads too. I should be back on the road next week.
