Tiptronic transmission

My 1995 993 is a four speeder. I note later models have Tiptronic S transmissions. I hope I am reading the descriptions correctly. Is it right to think this is a five speed unit. This being the case is upgrading a worthwhile change and at what cost?

Richard.

ps [:D] Maurice congratulations, your humour in the latest issue of Porsche Post is much appreciated in this household. We are still chuckling. Apart from the "shocker", in a recent message, that I spelt Monroe incorrectly, it is a mixed blessing to learn that the new bonnet struts I have just purchased will last longer than the two new monroe shocks recently fitted. Had I read your excellent Technical section, before chucking my money about, I would have Bilsteined the beast.

Richard.

I have a '96 Tiptronic 'S', it has four forward gears, the only difference the 'S' made is the ability to change gear via buttons on the steering wheel. You need to go 996 to get more forward gears.

Thats funny, I've got a 96 Targa, and i've got the option to change gears on the steering wheel. I thought all had after a certain year ?

Stuart.

Then your Targa must be an 'S'. As far as I know there are no markings on a 993 Tiptronic to indicate that it is an 'S'.

In the case of the Tiptronic the 'S' does not mean it has a fat ar*e.

I don't think there was a fat ar*e Targa.

I expect Maurice can tell us if the Tiptronic 'S' became standard from '96.
