To buy or not to buy?

Hi everyone. I have a bit of a quandry. I was thinking about purchasing either a 964 or 993 911 with a budget of around £18k. However after speaking to a local specialist it has been suggested to me that a Boxster may be more suitable for me. I want a car that can be used either every day or just at weekends and that is totally reliable. I don't want to be spending cash on it left right and centre and so the Boxster seems a good option. I assume that I will get a much newer Boxster for my budget and therefore a more reliable car. I would be really grateful for any information that the many Boxster owners on here can offer me. The BoxsterS is the model I fancy but would I be better off with a standard 2.7? Many thanks in advance. [;)]

Your budget will just about get you a facelift (52/03 or maybe a 53 plate privately) 2.7 with 228bhp, glass rear screen, glovebox, restled bumpers and clear lights all round. Similar outlay will see you in a good spec lowish mileage 2000W or X 250bhp S, with the plastic rear window, and unless they have been updated the orange indicators/lights. It is possible to get a facelift S for you budget as this ad proves http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/143322.htm although to my mind this sounds too cheap for a facelift S.

Running costs of the 2.7 are more affordable and the newer car may be less costly when it comes to wear and tear items. However, expensive items like the clutch and air con rad/condensors will probably have been replaced on a 7 year old S, whereas they may be on their way out on a 4 year old facelift.

On the road, there isn;t that much difference in outright performance, although you have to try harder in the 5 speed 2.7 than in the torquier and 6 speed S model.

Everyday use is no problem, a very practical car with two spacious luggage areas. Servicing typically £250 for a minor £400 for a major at reputable independents.

Every porsche owners original dream statement[;)]

You need to have an annual outlay budget....these cars are not ford fiestas remember....and then you can forget about costs and enjoy the important part - THE DRIVING.

I previously owned a 964 which I replaced with a Boxster S and they are soooo different - you really should drive one of each. The Boxster is more practical and easier to live with and drive - better heater, decent luggage space, better dashboard layout etc but the 964 was faster and more exciting.
