To change or not to change?

Hi all,

I am in a real quandary.... I am completely in love with my new 3.2 targa and managed to do 600 miles in the first month.... could be a problem as insurance is limited to 4K a year! Anyway I ramble on. My problem is although my car looks 'showroom' perfect from the outside, the interior is tired. Currently I have the original vinyl and pinstrip velour seats and doors, which are ok, but wouldn't have been my first chonce. I have spoken to a couple of trimmers and have quotes to replace/repair the original and to replace with full Porsche napa leather. The cost are not far enough apart to worry about, my issue is will it affect its future value if I change it? The trimmers who I prefer are based in Brentford and do all the trimming for Frank Dale and stepsons, the vintage RR specialists. Work looks superb!

I welcome your thoughts

many thanks

Philip

Hi Phillip,
will it affect the value?, in short yes it will, however, interior change is pretty easily reversible anyway, so if anyone were to want to return to original spec, it would not be a mammoth task. Unless the car is an "out of box, totally original timewarp" example, I would think the affect on value will be negligible as long as you keep to an original spec colour, black is probably safest. Depends how you view the car. Some people are precious about originality, others not so much.
interested to see what others thing but thats my view anyway.
mileage wise,, I think youll find that will drop down as the weather changes into winter as you want to avoid the salt etc as far as possible.
Regards
Graham

Collectors and speculators pay the highest prices for cars that are completely original, exactly as they came out of Zuffenhausen - paint, trim, glass, stickers, brake pads, fluids, air in tyres...you get the picture. Enthusiasts who actually want to drive and enjoy their car are slightly less anal about originallity and will buy a car that's in their price range and they like. For most real world cars a good retrim in leather will make the car more desirable and sellable. My car was originally trimmed in black leather but some time in its life it was retrimmed in red. This had absolutely no influence on my decision whether or not to buy the car (admittedly this was before 3.2's became 'collectable') and the attention it attracts suggests it would make the car more sellable should I ever decide to cash in in the future (which I won't...)
Just my 3 hap'orth, of course!

Do as you please, You say you are completely in love with her?

Several ways to look at this[8|]

Do you love her apart from the interior?

If the interior was new as from the factory would you love her more?

Just me but I like em as they came. I dont mind the odd mod but I would keep old part and replace if I decided to sell. With the interior you cannot do that.

If you have not already get a COA from Porsche cars then get one. See if the cars is as it left the factory. Prior to your ownership things could have already been changed? If changes have all ready been made they could irreversible. In which cas I would go for what I like on the interior.

If from looking at the COA the car is standard, I would stick with original spec.

I would keep the original interior, but at the same time look at options to purchase some other seats and door cards for re-trimming.

It been really hard to keep her in the garage with all this great weather we have been enjoying, had some amazing drives. see attached image of last weekend in the New Forest. see attached image. I think I am leaning towards the full leather option. it will never be a concourse car as I am enjoying driving her to much....plus I am not planning on selling any day soon.

Many thanks Graham

received the COA yesterday, just after I got the quote from the trimmer, hence my quandary. was rather hoping it didn't have the original. I think if I was looking for another car an it had a perfect full leather interior vs one which had original vinyl, I think I would probably go for the leather....Think I have probably answered my question.

good idea. The trimmer also said I can keep the original covers, door cards should anyone want to change back. which would be easier to store.

Glad you have resolved your dilemma , drive her for your enjoyment and not as a garage queen

I echo that sentiment, these car are to be used, not kept as a garage ornament
let us know what you choose, how about a nice retro pasha job?[:-]

Hi Philip,
I had my worn out seats in my 3.2 Carrera retrimmed and changed them to original Porsche Red Tartan.
It looks AMAZING.
