To do List on the 968 and 9mRacing

Well the ongoing story of my bargain left hooker CS, its now starting to show its true colours[]

I've been into 9m today at Warrington, and the verdict is very nice condition for a great price, but it needs some work to bring it upto scratch.

Had the alignments checked and tweaked, had the settings setup for a little extra neg camber on the recommendation of Robin their motorsport man [;)] but the rear toe was a pig they think one of the rear arms may be slightly bent as they had to put it on full adjustment to get it into spec. Not a problem in itself but hinted at the cars history, its had a knock at some time in its life and the front end has had quite a bit of work so it may have had a shunt although everything on the front is straight and has been done professionally, certainly the guys at 9m thought that its been sorted properly and nothing is amiss or should cause any concern. Total cost for the geometry setup was £175 took them 3 1/4 hrs to get it right i.e. £50/hr.

Now for the snagging list.

Front Struts are shot with some lateral play in both causing the vagueness of the front end at speed so they both need replacing completey not just inserts.

Rear shocks seem OK but they advised if I'm doing the front then best to do all round to ensure the balance is maintained

Rear disks are shot, so new disks and pads required now !

PS pump as I already new is doing an impression of a sieve.

Rear tyres on the wear marks already, I'm sure these looked ok last week [8|]

Front tyres both got loads of tread but one has a slash on the inside edge which goes right to the full depth of the tread so not too sure about that and can't really afford to do the whole set in one go, so it'll have to wait a month with some steady driving.

I've put a list into club auto sport in halesowen so he's going to quote me for all the gear and I'll probably give specialist cars of Malton a ring tomorrow.

Time to dust off the credit card looks like a lean month or two !

Now for 9m, they seem like a good bunch of folks with Porsche running thro' their veins, lots of nice hardware lying around even a couple of 965's in for work. Robin has a Motorsport background and is well up on his suspension setups.

But for me a LHD 968CS supercharged, big brakes, 18" cups, Gloss Black with a black and red colour coded interior with black leather recaro style seats, half roll cage, full harness........... just the dogs danglies.

As for the Throttle bodies, I get the impression its a dead duck the car they've been working on is now due for a SC instead as they just couldn't get the power out of the NA setup even with the quad TB's.

So there you go that was my day anyone want to invest in a worthy cause, send your donations to..................[:D]

I wouldn't be too downhearted Mike. I reckon that almost any car you buy is going to need tyres and brakes, almost as a given. Ditto the PS pump. I suspect a lot of CS's have had a bit of a clout too, so you could easily have paid that extra £4k and still have the same situation.

You seem to me to well clued up, and competent with a set of spanners too, so I have no doubt you'll have a corking car at the end of it.

Thats the plan John, just need the time and money now [;)]

I've just got some prices from LEDA and a full suspension kit inc springs is £775 so might be tempted for this.

Not got prices on standard CS stuff yet, hopefully I'll know what I'm going to do tomorrow, but part of me would like to keep things original.

Mike

Mike, if you get a quote for having the shocks replaced (standard jobs) I'd be interested to find out what the damage is. I have a sneaking suspicion mine is on the originals, and while not knackered as such I'm sure I would notice an improvement by replacing them.

Did you notice an improvement after the alignment?

A definate improvement Alex at least I can drive in a straight line now without constantly fighting with it, much more relaxed and enjoyable, especially on a nice quiet twisty A49 back from Warrington. The car seems more pointy into the corners if you know what I mean, probably the extra neg camber and correct castor adjustment that have helped here.

New suspension will transform the car as it does still wander quite a bit at the front, lateral play in the struts when you rock the wheel whilst up on the jack. As I get to know it I am realising just how loose the front end is at the moment. Something that until you've really pushed it you wouldn't notice on a sedate test drive [8|]. I'm going to change the anti roll bar bushes too as the PS pump leaking onto them causes them to go soft.

I'll post up the prices of the parts tomorrow once I've called a few places, as for fitting I'm happy to do all this myself and get the geometry re-checked afterwards.

Having looked at the bank balance I think I'll probably go with standard Koni replacements, although I might stretch to adjustables shocks if I'm pushed [;)] Brakes will stay standard for the time being and I'm going to stick some Toyo rubber on the rear for now.

Not a 968CS but I just had standard Sachs front and rear shocks fitted to my 944 S2 today after 146,000 miles. Cost was £400 from Bert at Berlyn Services, but I notice that Porscheshop list the 968 CS items at the same price. Here's a paste FYI from my thoughts on the Titanic forum:

The most noticeable change is under braking there is much less nose dive, yet under hard acceleration the nose still lifts about the same, maybe a bit less. The ride is definitley less wallowy now, but still nowhere near as hard as the M030 on my Turbo, so it is still nice and compliant and relaxing for long journeys.

I chucked it a bit through the corners on the way into work tonight and lean is reduced, the car feels more nimble than it did before without being harsh, so on the whole I am very pleased.

Before the new shocks were fitted I tried pulling them open and closed by hand. It could be done but was very very difficult and slow. Now that I have the old ones at home I tried the same and they could be pulled in and out at will, much easier and obviously much more worn.

OK news so far, I've spoken with a few folk today design911, porschehop, OPCs and Bert at Berlyns

All prices plus VAT

Power steering pump seal ordered £9.95 inc P&P from OPC at Sutton Coldfield.

I've had some quotes in for Struts ranging from £138 to £180 for standard kit, but no one seems to carry them on the shelf !

Rears between £80 & £100.

Adjustable Koni's full kit with springs just under £600 from porscheshop

LEDA oil damped adjustable ride height & rebound full kit with spring £775 - 20% disc = £620

Rear Disks around £50 and pads £40

Spoke to Bert at Berlyn and he says he cannot get front struts for the 968 CS ? strange ? isn't the CS the same as the S2 ?

So there you go, should give you a rough idea of the range of costs.

Richard fom club autosport just called with a quote best to date,

Front Sachs £125 x2 = £250
Rear Sachs £56 x 2 = £112

Rear disks £48 ea x 2 = £96
Rear pads £38 a set = £38

Therefore £496 + VAT = £582.80

Damn that VAt !

Remember to ask if they are Porsche disks or Zimmermans.

Nothing wrong with Zimmermans, but you should know what you're getting.

JH

Anyone know who actually makes the OE disks for Porsche?

Well I've just bit the bullet [] and ordered Sachs Front and Rears, plus zimmerman disks, porsche pads & new ARB bushes from Specialist cars at a slighly better price than Club Autosport plus £10 delivery to the door. They've got to order the front struts but it should all be with me by Thursday next week.

Funniest thing was the parts guy was squirming as first off he could not match on price at all, then 10 minutes later he rang me back saying OK we can do this but reckons that at the price now offered there's no profit in it at all and that they'd only done it out of principle, they don't like to be beaten. [:D]

Shame they can't say that for their used car prices [;)]

Anyway thats that done, just tyres now, but they might have to wait till next month.[&:]

Mike

One thing that I have learned is that the Zimmerman replacement discs are *slightly* different than the factory versions. The replacement ones will get a bit of surface rust on the hats, unless you mask them off nicely beforehand and paint them before installing them. I used a high-heat silver paint so that they do not look any different.

Welcome Tifo, are you the Tifosiman from Rennlist, your name is familiar? I'm a member there but don't post much.

I agree about the Zimmermans, I have them on the front and OEM on the back, guess which ones rust....

Thought about painting them blue but decided against it, too Max Power so Silver heat resistant it is [;)]

Mike

Thanks Alex, that's me! I've lurked on here for awhile and learned quite a bit from this forum. I thought it was time I participated a bit!

Take care,

Jeremy

All my kit has arrived from Specialist cars today as they'd promised and I was pleasantly surprised, apart from the rear disks being Zimmermanns everything is all OE Porsche equipment cracking value compared to an OPC.

Can't wait to get the new shocks and ARB bushes fitted, then at last I can give it some proper beans round some twisties [:D]
