To track or not to track !

Inspired bye a previous thread. My 89' motor has nearly covered 132k miles with no engine rebuild. Oil pressure if fine, runs fine, and has been regularly serviced. (It has the usual small oil leak, nothing serious though).

Anyway, I wanted to throw it about on a track day or two. Would this kill the engine with so many miles and no rebuild?

No, you should be fine.

Check the temperature and oil pressure every lap. Perhaps, set yourself a rev limit.

Oil change it regularly.

The odd track day probably helps it by burning out some carbon and getting it up to operating temp. If you read the various Porsche books, you will see that these engines are seriously over-engineered for what they are. A track day or two will do no harm at all. If you are really worried change the oil afterwards or at 3000 mile intervals - that will do more good than anything else.

The rev-limiter provides a pretty safe rev limit [:)]

BTW, mine looked new inside after 75,000 miles and its been roundly thrashed for the last 20,000 miles - track days, top speed runs etc. The known problems with 3.2s (namely valve guide wear) occur because the engines are babied and used for short trips and consequently never get up to top speed.

I once met a guy who was reluctant to take his 930 over 4000rpm because it might be bad for it or somehow hurt it. He must have wondered why people say 930s are fast as the econoboxs out accellerated him and took off into the distance !

Its just a car. Who are you saving it for anyway? You can't undo whats done, so just make the most of it now. Just my $0.02.

Cheers guys. You are quite right Richard, it is "just a car" (all be it one hell of a creation) and you cant take it with you !

Whatever happens, one day you will sell the car. This is inevitable, even if it doesn't happen until your children pack you off to a home for the mildly deranged.

When it does happen, you won't think back wistfully about all those great times you spent stationary in the garage.
 
I have a '73 911E which had an engine rebuild over 20 years ago, with more bits done over the years, and did my first track day at Brands a couple of weeks ago. The car loved it, and has 'driven' better since having had a good cough! First time I had really pushed it and me. I loved it, though scared myself a bit...doh! So go for it..it's a fantastic blast...the car can always be put back together again!!
 
Ditto. My car always runs better after it has been used well - I take a lot of care to warm it up etc but then use the performance as much as I can. Only one way to find out ................

Update on why to do a trackday! I went to Bruntingthorpe yesterday for blast! This is an aerodrome just south of Leicester, and had the fab day! A general 'old' car day, so a variety of makes and models, though there was only one other Porsche. Every ability from novice to manics! Very well marshalled and no more than about 20 cars on at any time..track about 2 1/2 miles long, so could really test my car and myself. Excellent instruction an a generally very friendly crowd. This was much better than Brands in that there were no barriers to hit ( just the odd jumbo in the middle) and loads of space so you didn't feel intiminated at all..I really am bitten by the speed/adrenalline bug...!! So...go for it!!
