Since there seems to be quite a following for Grand Prix Legends on here I thought I'd pass on that I have spent a couple of hours playing TOCA Race Driver 2 recently.

It's a very impressive game. The graphics are pretty slick and they run at a good frame rate even on relatively weedy PCs (I have everything maxed out at 1600x1200 and I only have an Athlon 2400+ with 512Mb RAM and an ATi 9600 graphics card) and the physics are superb. Likewise the track detail is spot on.

Bathurst is as awesome as it looks on TV and the Ford GT is a beautifully balanced piece of machinery with just the right amount of grunt for the chassis.

On-line play looks pretty good as well after a 15 minute blast.

All in all highly recommended and £17.99 delievered from Play.com
 
You sod! I'm going to have to go and get it now and we know what that means... whon't work on PC so £18 of game turns into £300 of hardware up grade.

I'd forgoten the 3 weeks of pointless time wasting and little sleep moving up through the ranks, and developing my race car stable, only to have Peter erase the whole lot. [:mad:]

I fancy an X-Box so I can drive the 'Ring on Project Gotham 2, but I can't bring myself to buy a console for one game when I have a PS and a PS2 I only ever seem to use at Christmas when the weather is cr@p and the TV is worse.

I wonder if X-Box live players and PC players can race together on-line?

The case says minimum spec is 800MHz processor, 256Mb RAM and a Direct-X 9b supported video card. Recommended is only 1.4GHz and 512Mb RAM. Note is is a DVD though, not a CD, so you need a DVD drive to play it.

There's a demo available for download, probably from the Codemasters site.

Based on a conversation at Frontrunner I rather suspect one of our number has been involved in the development of the game, now I think of it.

Unfortunatly I didn't work on Race Driver, I work on Rally, but I do agree it looks very good, definatly a marked improvement over the last one. Surprisingly I haven't actually played it yet, so can't comment on that. We don't just have all our games floating around to play all day you know!!!

I could try and find out if XBox Live and PC players can race together but I do doubt it. Even though they are similar I don't think they are compatable.

C'mon Fen, those console games are far too easy [:D] To drive the Ring you need to get GPL (7.99 from PC World) and play with the big boys. Setting the cars on the lowest trainer level gives an identical laptime to driving a 944 Turbo round. I am afraid to admit [8|] I regularly put on Tony Footes in car video of us at the Ring and try to beat it whilst playing GPL. It's bl00dy tricky but I can just do it, and the screen shot compared to the video shot is near as damnit identical.

I have broadband at home now so can host an online game whenever you guys are ready [;)]
 
I've played both demo versions, on-line and sinlge player and they are excellent. Gonna have to buy the game and a new wheel for the PC as my old force feedback one won't work on XP.

I have an xBox and the PC racing games with a FF wheel are light years ahead IMHO

I already have GPL - I spent some time looking for it during the period between it being mainstream and going widespread on budget purely because of the 'Ring, but I find it really difficult and the visuals don't inspire me to stick with it.

The FF on Race Driver 2 is very subtle. It's there, but it isn't forceful enough, so the wheel is very light in some cars.

I ordered from Play on SUnday (when they said it was out of stock) and it arrived on Wednesday.
 
GPL is really strong on race physics but not so hot on graphics (it is about 5 years old) but luckily there are many many patches and addons for teh tracks and cars to bring it up to date at http://gpladdons.m4driving.sm/index_eng.htm

Hmm, subtle isn't what you want. After a few stages on Colin McRae with the FF on your arms and shoulders ache [8D]

Whats the crack on extra tracks then Paul.

I had Snetterton some years back and, with no disrespect to the originator, it wasn't that good. Whilst Snett may, or may not, have looked like it the sim in 67 there were odd areas in the sim where the surface was very slippery for no apparent reason. I don't know if it was intentional but it made the track almost undrivable.
 
There is a database of all the addon tracks at http://trackdb.d2g.com/? Some are pretty amateurish but most are very good and get updated all the time by the huge bunch of anoraks that play the game. There are a couple of versions of Snetterton, they are all slippy to me [:D] I had my highest ever finish at the 1964 version (2nd place) so I love it.

I'll see if I can dig out some setup files that make the cars easier to drive and email them to you. Out of the box they are very difficult, but mess around with the springs, ARB's, bump stops, gearbox, tyre pressure etc and it gets much easier [;)]

Top Man Paul.

I have had a bit of a play with the settings at Silverstone but there is a fine line between making the car handle better and making it handle cr@p.
 
Tempting, I enjoyed race driver, it is a good simulation, but as I am now spending too much time playing cmr05 I will pass for now - unless it has the old Nurburgring.

You swine Rich! Peter has his Chrismas present now, we can't go for TOCA RD2 as well. RD1 is very good though [8|]

No I shan't be tempted - so don't tell me about any of the notable features.
 
It doesn't have the Nurburgring (mores the pity), but the PC version is a very, very good driving game.
 
Try to keep games of the PC I waste enough time when I should be working already. I believe GT4 does have the Nurburgring, and is due out very soon,
