Today I suffered my first ever Porsche breakdown

Having experienced 7+ years of trouble free Porsche motoring, I suffered my first breakdown today...

Misfiring and loss of power, and felt like the back end was shaking. Fortunately on 400yds from work, so free-wheeled into the car-park with the engine management light on...

Porsche Assitance (RAC) picked the car up within 20 minutes, and its at my local OPC for diagnosis now. RAC fella believes it is one of the coils ?!? Anybody have any thoughts what it might be?

Waiting on my luck-dip loan car to arrive, and a call back from the OPC

All in all, impressed with the service so far... Fingers crossed that it is a warranty job

Sounds like the coils and happened to me only a few weeks ago.
See the thread i started then here:

As long as you have the extended warranty you should be fine.
I blame the crap weather as they only seem to go in the wet.
Seems to be a common problem though on earlier 997's that are driven daily.

Jimberland,

Read your thread and sounds identical... Ironically I parked my car facing the opposite way to how I'd normally park it last night, and the wind and rain will have been hitting the rear end

Have been told that my hire car will be here by 2:30pm (which is fine as I said pre 4pm), and that it'll be a BMW, Merc or a Jag

Fortunately I have the extended warranty, and yes mine is an early 997 (Jan '05) that is driven daily

How long was your in for?

Mine was in for 3 days because the OPC was busy the day Porsche assist dropped it off.
The actual work only took a few hours I believe and I picked it up on the 3rd day as that was most convenient for me.
So you could have your car back at the weekend, fingers crossed.

During our discussions with Porsche assist at the RAC visit earlier in the year.. most regular call outs on Porsches were..

Tyres, Batteries and Coil pack failures....

Seems not an uncommon fault.. and not just on Porsches.

Had the same problem with my 54 plate Carerra S earlier this year. PC Sheffield had it sorted within 1 day, all covered under warranty. No problems since - although I have renewed the warranty just in case!

Got the car back by 4pm...

In fact the car was ready before my loan car (a lousy Merc C180) arrived at 2pm

Whilst I'm please at the level of service, the fact that they had coils in stock makes me think that this is quite a serious design flaw. In fact there were 2 others in at the same time having the same problem repaired

I shall definitely be renewing my warranty in January
