Tomtom Satnav

The power adapator for my TomTom satnav doesn't fit properly in the cigarette lighter in my 944. It keeps falling out, or at least it did until my girlfriend broke it trying to persuade it to stay connected. Does anyone have any suggestions for other options for powering the satnav?

thanks

Wrap insulating tape around the adaptor to make it a bit fatter mate. Hopefully it mite stay in. Had the same problem with my ipod player thingy.

Use a Belkin USB power adaptor. It's tiny and fits flush with the dashboard panel. It's such a good fit, it's kinda semi-permanent.

Find a 1 to 4 adapter which does fit in. They usually have deeper sockets and can be put somewhere that the wire doesn't get pullled.

reckon its about time that car manufacturers installed a more discrete and practical in car power supply for gadgets. Whats the point of persevering with such a huge impractical 12v socket when only a fraction of car users are smokers and would use the cigar lighter anyway ? grrr

That's exactly what they do on a lot of new cars. My current BMW and the 2005 Honda Accord estate I had both came with multiple 12v sockets around the car.

I'm out of touch [:(] haven't been in a new car for 5 years+
What sort of power supply socket is fitted these days then if it isn't a cigar lighter type of socket ?

They are standard cigar lighter sockets but with a plastic cover and no lighter.

You find them front, rear and in the boot.

To be honest any 12v supply can be turned into a feed by simply fitting the required plug/connector to it.

If you are adept and handy then a simple `plug` on a cigar lighter `tube` will allow the connector of choice to be fitted within the plug while utilising the cigar lighter fitting/chassis to secure it

thats what I thought [8|] I wasn't aware of a new style power outlet standard for cars yet.
We certainly need one.
Its about time a new design was implemented. Cigar lighter outlets are complete rubbish frankly.

This is what I use for my Tom Tom (iPhone cradle). I use a USB to micro Usb cable to connect to the cradle.

Belkin charger

Can also charge other devices. Much more useful for modern devices than a cigarette lighter socket.

That looks to be exactly what I need! From Argos as well, so should be able to find it easily enough.

PS: thanks for your advice on how to check inside my sills for rust at the Porsche Picnic.

Another plus for the Belkin one - just perfect for us and 1000mW too, lots are only 500,- my phone needs 850mW when running the sat nav etc.

Belkin do two versions - make sure you get the one with the green LED. The Blue LED version is a lower wattage, built specifically for the iPhone.

Hope you're enjoying your car Ian. Are you coming to Frontrunner on Sunday?

Loving it.

I'm planning on going to Frontrunner, provided I can sort out why the right rear turn indicator fuse keeps blowing.
