Is it possible for the water pressure to get too high?

Hi Everyone, its been a while since i have been on here just been running the 924 turbo series 2 the expension tank seems to spitting fluid out of the top on running and Idleing the tank seems to have poped upwards what could be the reason for thsi can anybody shed any light please?

The Fan is kicking in properly and is running

Thank you

Chris Rushton

924 Turbo Series 2

You could try rebleeding the cooling system to see if that helps, but my feeling is that you may have a blown head gasket. My normally aspirated 924 Auto had the same symptoms when it's gasket went. (No mixing of fluids, just pressurisation and throwing water out.)

It cost me ÂŁ100 for gaskets/head bolts (All genuine Porsche) and ÂŁ200 labour, but remember that's on a standard 2 litre. Labour on a Turbo is probably higher because there is more dismantling involved.
I could have done it cheaper with pattern parts but I dont want to be doing it again in 12 months time!

Ah ok just looking a gaskets 115 from Porschshop not too bad but has lots to dismantal are there any other signs i could check before i go to get it done? i dont seem to have a loss of water except a couple of spits from around the rim of the tank

If its just a bit from the tank, have you tried changing the pressure cap? They are only about a fiver and can fail. It's also worth looking VERY Closely at the plastic around the filler neck. Our gasket failure cracked the header tank!

Ahh thank you i shall go and have a look i have a spare Expansion tank Cap i shall try that see if that makes a difference thsnk you i shall report back tomorow and let you know

+1

Is it pressuring up before the thermostat opens?
Have you checked for mixing of fluids - water in the oil etc.?

Ok I have given the car a 20mile run there is no mixing fluids i have bought a brand new cap for the resevoir been watching the temp guage and it goes up and comes down as the fan switches on so this is all working correctly
When opening the bonnet ofter the run there is fluid around the neck of the Resevoir which suggests that there has been high pressure at some point and has blown the bottle.

I Know that when it went in for an MOT last year it over heated and fountained everywhere so im thinking that this could have caused the resevoir to break in the first place and this could just be the problem. i have ordered a new resevoir which will be here friday.

that a side shouldn't the Cap prevent this from happening anyway?

and on another note i have a Rubber water Pipe that is Perrishing it comes from the Pipe that has the bleed Screw in the top , i Have replaced the pipe with a temp one at the moment bit it doesnt seem to fit that well. i have be to the local OPC and Apararently this pipe is no longer Available its a angled elbow that takes the water from the top of the engine down between the Airbox and the alternator belt the PArt number is 931 106 159 00

If anyone knows where i might be able to get one could you let me know please?

Ask over on the Porsche 924 owners club forum:

I know of at least one Turbo being broken for spares over there and second hand in good nick is better than nothing!

I had this probem and I got round it by getting a lower coolant hose and cutting off the 90 degree elbow. It is exactly the right size and I am pretty sure that I sent this into the club to be published many years ago along with an article detailing the removal of the head. Interestingly the factory manual does not specifcally mention replacing the head bolts on the turbo if I remember correctly. Take care of the flywheel sensor, they aren't available either and without it you cant run the engine.

Thank you for the Info on the pipe that is something i had concidered doing using a lower pipe i shall try this out thank you

I Know that the flywheel sensor is no longer available i had trouble with the wire on mine i had to have an auto elctrician put a new plug on the end. I did read ages ago somewhere make new ones im sure it was in 911 PW mag but i cant remember when

Going back to the main problem I drove the car last night to the local club meet around 35 miles and its performing fine i think that perhaps it just over heated and split the bottle then. im not losing much water at all it looks alot when its spirting out but is really not making much difference to the water level itself . watch this space i shall keep things updated
