Too Horny!

No, not a late night chat line but a problem with my 996 [:)]

Some time ago when I used the horn, it stayed on for a few moment longer than pressed then on a couple of occasions I had to physically pull the horn element of the steering wheel out a little (not remove) to stop it.

That still happens occasionally and also when braking hard. Embarrassing!!!

I think its probably the contacts / spring element within the steering wheel itself rather than a contact elsewhere as I can normally stop the problem by pulling the front of the steering wheel.

Before I start to dismantle the steering wheel and have a look, has anyone else had a similar problem and advice / suggesting please.

I have an airbag (probably standard) and tiptronic controls on the steering wheel.

Thanks,

Rob

It's a common problem on the 4-spoke steering wheels. The rubber bushes in the airbag retaining frame break up. You have to buy the complete retaining frame (£40) as Porsche don't sell the bushes separately. However, there is some excellent info on a cheap fix on RennTech at: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1728

Richard,

Once again, thanks for the information. I will look at the thread and let you know the outcome.

Funny enough, I have never noticed a thread on this horn problem in the past..... Maybe the subject wasn't as, erm, eye catching as mine!

Cheers,

Rob

Comedy .... downright embarassing......

Was at Dunsfold Park for the Mini Top Gear event today that was organised by Nanthan Little and, just after winning 6 bottles of red in a raffle, the horn goes off permanently and I wander over in front of about 100 mini owners and proceed to pull my steering wheel until it stops....nice!
