Tools and spares - what to carry?

Next Saturday is the 25th anniversary of Black Bomber's registration... So about time I cleared out the boot!

The trouble is, what to take out, what to leave, so I am trying to compile a sensible list of tools and spares... I am sure this has been done before, but I can't find it, so here is what I have compiled so far:

[FONT=arial"]Tools to carry list:[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=arial"]Spares to carry:[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=arial"]compressor for space saver[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=arial"]DME Relay[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=arial"]10mm combination spanner[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=arial"]piece of electrical wire[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=arial"]12mm combination spanner (air bleed for coolant)[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=arial"]duct tape[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=arial"]13mm combination spanner[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=arial"]cable ties[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=arial"]17mm combination spanner[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=arial"]piece of rope[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=arial"]Pozi screwdriver[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=arial"]ratchet strap[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=arial"]Small straight screwdriver[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=arial"]Big straight screwdriver[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=arial"]water[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=arial"]14mm combination spanner[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=arial"]oil[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=arial"]hammer[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=arial"]19mm spanner[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=arial"]soft socket for wheel nuts[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=arial"]1/2" drive breaker bar[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=arial"]mole grips[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=arial"]snipe nosed pliers[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=arial"]bullnosed pliers[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=arial"]Jump leads[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=arial"]empty fuel can[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
What have I missed that will now leave me stranded and kicking myself (I do carry an RAC card too!)

Nooo.... That is what I have been carrying, this is the new, light-weight list! In truth, I think my tool kit has been used more often to fix other peoples cars than to fix my own!

Trouble is, if you rely on a breakdown service then you need to make sure that also have a spare hour or more if/when you do break down !

Tools are talismen - they ward off breakdowns.

This is logically explained by the fact that the tool you need to do a job is the one that you don't have. Therefore if you have the tool for every possible job then no job will ever arise - i.e. your car will never break down.

Ergo, take lots of tools. It guarantees a reliable car. [:)]

very good logic old chap !

I also find exactly the same with spares/consumables happens for continental trips (although never yet taken a spare piston/ con rod...).

Btw you should try driving around Spa in your S2 its a LOT of fun :)

I took more tools to le mans than a typical AA van. I'm with Oli on this one, the more you take the less you'll need.

yes, I agree. I was making a rather flippant comment.

The last time I needed to call the RAC, I was delighted to hear the guy proclaim "I used to own one of these..." as he walked up to my car. He had it running in no time at all.

I'd add a can of tyre weld - just in case that 20 year old space saver prefers to stay collapsed.

I'm sure, but I was happy to support Gerry and Tom in their S2 while they were doing the CSCC - that was a lot of fun too!

Ian - it's worth blowing up that space saver spare once in a while as well, if nothing else to make sure it works. It's also an eye-bogglingly odd sight to watch as it unfolds itself (and re-folds itself as it deflates.)

I'd heard they were almost impossible to deflate back to the compressed size - clearly not if you recommend inflation once in a while?
