Top end Re-build

Hi,
What parts are normaly replaced in a top end rebuild?
After how many miles does a 3.2 engine normally need one?

This one is like knitting fog...difficult.

There is no one answer, but having just completed an exercise with a few large specialists to get an answer to the same question, have the following advise...

Mileage - no answer...can be from 15,000 to 100,000+...depends how driven
Parts - Rings, Valve guide oil seals, valve guides (perhaps) cam chain, tensioners...lots; of gaskets... Clips, pins, misc bearings... loads of oil,.... time to re-lap valves
Cost - £2500+ vat

I' ve got it all down on paper somewhere so mail me direct, and I' ll give you the details

Totally agree with Steve... a poorly driven and maintained car may need a top-end before a high mileage, well-maintained car.
I monitored oil usage and had it " dyno' d" on a rolling road to see if the engine was " tired" . In the end at 198bhp and 500miles to the litre of oil, I thought it better to have a top-end done before anything failed catestrophically! £2500 now is better than £4000 later!

Lloyd, how much did it cost you to get it dyno' d and can anywhere with a rolling road do it or does it need to be porsche specific?
 
Opening myself up to all sorts of abuse here, but I' ll ask anyway !!

What do you mean by poorly driven ? For example, too many gear changes at low revs perhaps ??
 
Didn' t see this topic earlier one, but would like to stick my neck out to say the 3.2 carrera engine seems to be the most resilient of modern day cars, hydraulic tensioners
and electronic fuel injection possibly helping out there to provide less stress to the engine...Move onto the 964 and it would appear a step was made backwards with reliability and servicing costs.

From what info I have been able to glean, most 3.2 engines would be considered for top end rebuild at around 100-110,000 miles, but if your lucky, can go on for a lot longer.

My own car is still original at 112,000 miles, although I haven' t had it dyno' d (yet)..but was in the shop for a minor running problem recently, whereby the cylinders were tested
and all is well with the compressions, and the seals of the valves/ports...

So if I' m real lucky, as I have no oil leaks (in 4 years have not had to top up between annual service)...I may have a couple of years or so left prior to major overhaul.

By the way, most independents/engine builders say the bottom end is generally good for 250,000 miles.

I have a 1985 model cabriolet that has 110,000 miles on the clock. It has a dodgy service history and is generally a bit tatty. I use it daily for work and hammer it around the countryside. It leaks no oil and burns very little. Oil pressure is good and performance is crisp. Engine sounds beautiful.

I am reluctant to have a top end rebuild because nothing appears wrong. Should I wait for a problem? The engine could go on for another 20,000 miles or so?
