Hi guys,

I am thinking about having a top end rebuild done on my 964. Where did everyone get this done too and what was the cost. I am thinking new valves, valve guides, piston rings, timing chains, valve springs, tensioners......etc. I am looking to import all the parts from the states due to the favourable dollar. Should i have the bottom end done as well?. Going to go for 9m motec after and maybe super charger.

Well you can never have enough power!!

Hi Tim,
If you are thinking of ordering from the States beware ! from the one and only experience i have had you don't always receive what you expect. Check every detail with your supplier first, even things like who will pay the postage and return duty if the items are incorrect or faulty. Best of luck [;)]

just really to freshen up the engine its ever so slightly low on pressure. The car has 134,000 on the clock and does not leak any oil at all. I just feel that it would be good to have it done. The cars not for sale and will be with me forever so why not!!

Hi ,

Last year I went down this route using the states as a major source and then 100% rebuilt my 964 engine, its all documented on the Pelican web site and also there is an article in Jan 08 edition of "Total 911" of my rebuild.

A few Lessons learnt :

- Do not just do just a top rebuild ...at that mileage I can 100% guarantee the shells will be very worn and the case will be leaking or about to . If your in at the top level your 85% there already . I have heard of one guy who spent £5K on the top rebuild and then few thousand miles later the bottom bearings went the engine was shot ..I brought some of the parts for my rebuild ;-)
- The 964 3.6 is more tuned than the old 911 engines so the bottom has a harder time, so the top and bottom need to go hand in hand, talking to a large indie in Surrey he agreed and told me this before I told him!!!
- Anything you buy from the states and sent over ..you pay import tax on and courier import costs..approx 5-8% of the total item ..so it all adds up. I had some wrong shipped items which had to return and in some cases stand the cost of buying UK again. If your in the states (business etc) then its a little easier to bring back ...i did this in some cases.
- Cam shaft will be warn ..one lob always goes ..£550 each side !! or a regrind for less than £200 a pair!!
- If you are looking to do it yourself then you need a very good workshop and a few specialist tools ..see my web article.
- it takes a pro approx 130hrs to do a full rebuilt on a 964 .....took me approx 150hrs and Ive built a quite a few engines in the passed but the 964 is the labour intensive one so far ...not very production line aware ;-)
- what ever you do its not cheap ...my full rebuild cost me £3.5K ....garage cost £7-8K
