hi

anyone catch top gear tonight and the poor 924 which i think was really badly treated and over looked. I was hoping that the programme would show the car off for the little gem it really is, oh well not to worry.

PS hello to everybody that turned out at HQ today nice day, good run out.

yep! couldn't agree more.

Nope - unfortunately The HQ is a round trip of almost 450 miles for me... (Oh! and seven hours of driving...)

Bollox to what Top Gear think - the 924's and 944's are great fun, great value for money and do the job perfectly

It would have been fine if he had'nt buggered about with it and spent the extra cash sensibily and kept the thing original !!!.
See you've found a 924 john !!.

Looked like a shoo in until the last round! Clarkson didn't mention how much it cost him to have the bits pulled from the heap of a 928 he had and then the build up costs to make the seats and table, but a clever dodge nonetheless.
Basically Hammond & May didn't spend their money wisely at all, but that showbiz I guess.

Hammond didnt spend his money really he just p**sed it away, but like you say it wouldnt have made good telly to ahve finished with the 924 having a good review rather than just a p*ss take.

PS go on then John show us a picture of your new P.A.J.

Taking Top Gear seriously is a bit like believing that Eastenders is a documentary [:D] (mind you some folk think it is []) OK, so it wasn't a very serious piece of motoring journalism, but it was very funny, even my wife was in fits of laughter.

Ah the new purchase [&:] I have done something daft and bought a car sight unseen. [] I get it next week, so no pics as yet, nor much detail. Lets just call it a little adventure for the moment shall we ... but one you can rest assured you will hear all about in due course. [;)]

Dammit ... rumbled! []

Richard assured me that the flames were just transfers and would peel off, and that after being on TV the car would rocket in value. Besides, I couldn't resist that gear knob. [8D]

Really John!?
Did you really buy LBW 466W!

I think the 924 did really well!

It didn't break down
It did 27mpg, the best of the three
It did the longest 11 mark
It was a bargain
It also did a 1.43 in the hands of The Stig [:)]

A great advert for the 924 (although not in the Lonely Hearts section [;)])

don't get me wrong I'm not so up tight that i didnt find parts very funny, and yes i watched with a grin on my face, and so did the wife. But and thats the problem i think the little 924 preformed very well but hammond buggered it.

After having a good night's sleep to think about it, one of the downside parts of the 924's appearance was the chance they took to trot out all the old prejudices about the 924's VW/Audi van engine heritage which was almost tantamount to saying "not a real Porsche".

But I keep telling myself it was only a bit of fun and not to be taken seriously, after all they don't really want to be taken seriously, do they?

The message from the piece (if there was one) was that you get what you pay for.
Big, complicated expensive cars have more things to go wrong.
Hence, if you have limited means, do not do something daft and buy a 928, but buy a 924 or 944.
The 924 did well and did not break down. Of the three it was the most sensible purchase.
Anyway, the Viper uses a truck engine, any no-one argues about that not having enough go.

However, bangernomics, i.e. motoring on a shoestring, is not particularly sensible when using sports cars.

Why they spent the cash on making them worse I don't know, I guess it is just artistic licence. We could get up tight about it being sacrilege and a lack of respect, but it's a £750 car, and why should a Porsche be any different.
Financially there was little reason to spend money on them, since you would not recover the cost, so they had come to the end of their lives. Pretty reasonable lap times though.
If they had bought a Skoda, Granada and a Capri, we would not be complaining.

Again all good points well made, but the fact of the matter is we don't own capri's or skoda's etc i own a 924 so i guess i'm alittle closer to the subject matter, and it was a laugh and i guess good t.v. and some press is better than no press i guess, but the 924 story always seems to look one sided to me thats all. I think most people will see the strenghts of the little car but most will see a car that is for Middle Age Men going through a mild life crisis, as was the talk at work this morning, powered by a van engine..I just think it would have been good to see the other side of the story ie lots of the cars still going, the fact that these car's are O.A.P's really and can still holding there own. etc...

But, to quote a Lexus advert, "it's the feeling inside".
Whilst it's nice to have everyone agree with your choice of car, it isn't essential - you know whether you have made a good choice or not, and whether it gives a good performance and account of itself.
A car is more than the sum of it's parts, otherwise some very expensive cars wouldn't be taken half as seriously.

Remember, Clarkson made some comment about the C4S being all show rather than go, slower than a C2, for posers, and for cheapskates who wanted to pretend the they had a turbo without wanting to spend the cash. I had to take some grief for that (since I had a C4S at the time). They missed the point that it gave you 8-10K worth of options for 5K more, that it had the lowest depreciation, and that the lowered wider track made it handle better.

They need a one-line soundbite to put a simple label on a particular vehicle for the general population. Its good if it is true, but it doesn't need to be.
Skoda have an enviable history in rallying, but it didn't stop people taking the p!ss for years.
