Top tip - Throttle Opening

If your not sure, it would be well worth checking the throttle is opening fully as "our cars" seem prone to the linkage stretching over time.
If it's not opening fully (to the stop), the linkage can be adjusted (even by a relative technophobe like me) at the point near the left handside of the gearbox.

Once adjusted you could notice a significant performance improvement.

Andy is correct. My late 964 suffered from a "stretched" throttle cable. Once back in adjustment the performance was restored. Forgotten just how sharp the pick-up used to be.. Least expensive performance upgrade I've ever done!

Who needs chips..

Hi Andy . "ditto"... Discovered last night, came home tonight to your message, sorry I was out pounding the pavement. Did yours need adjusting ?

Hi,

Could you please supply any further information on how this is done, as I cannot find any reference to the throttle cable in the Bentley book.
Thanks.

Martyn,
I think you'll find thats because there is no cable in the system, its a full mechanical linkage with rods and levers. Somewhere near the side of the gearbox, from what I remember, there is lever that turns the linkage through 90 degrees up into the engine bay. Anyway, at this connection the linkage is adjustable with a rose joint or ball and cup type arrangement.

Well, you learn something new every day. Sorry to disagree but both my earlier 964 and my present 3.2 have cables.

Dave

Couldn't find any cable myself in the linkage, but what ever, Phil describes the point at which the adjustment is made accurately.
On later 3.2's there is a retaining clip that needs to be carefully removed before you can prize the cup off the ball. The joint needs a good clean up before you can see this clearly & then re-greasing when finished.

I don't have the details as I don't have my bentley at the moment but there is a full throttle (or WOT) switch on the 3.2. This is activated when the throttle is approx 70% open and tells the dme to go to the full throttle map. Often when the throttle cable/rod adjustment is out this switch is not activated as well as the throttle butterfly not opening enough. You can test it quite easily with a multimeter.

As I said I don't have exact details but the switch is on the right of the throttle body as you look at it from the rear (its around looking black thing). There are two connectors on it (one above the other) one is for the idle position switch and one is for the full throttle switch.

I'm not sure which is which from memory but I guess one should be closed circuit when the accel pedal is not depressed. The other should only be closed ciruit when the pedal is 70% pressed or more.

You dont need the ignition on or the car running for this test.
Unplug both connector/s and with the accelerator pedal at rest test each of the two contacts for closed circuit. One connector should be closed circuit the other open.

Press the accelerator fully and you should now see closed circuit on the one that was open and vice versa.

Now you now which one is idle and which one full throttle.

You can now test when the full throttle one comes on. It should come on at approx 70% travel of the pedal.

Now test the idle. It should only be on when the pedal is not depressed and go of just as you press it a bit.

You may need an assistant unless you have very long arms or a multimeter you can clip on and beeps when a circuit is closed.

One thing to note: If your full throttle switch is closing just as you reach full pedal travel your linkage is still out of adjustment. The throttle butterfly will only be about 70% open and therefore leaving quite a bit more power on the table!

Steve.. Can you check in my Bentley and confirm this sounds right.

Cheers

Andy

Andy, Wonder if there are perhaps differences between LHD, 911's (mine) and UK cars over things like bowden cables v linkages?

Dave

For those of us (Me!) relatively new to a 3,2, can anyone provide some pic's so we can located a tackle this adjustment?

I have a copy of the Bentley manual at this time, and as reported earlier, can find no reference to throttle adjustment. However, to test the throttle position switch, then Andy's process is OK.
