I would never re-use an old nut, get a scat one and never worry again, Duane says 'be sure the needle bearings inside the nut are lubricated when installing'
It's a bugger of a job to tighten... two men and a breaker bar/torque wrench!

Yep 100% need a new nut every time ........ A MUST
Harry said to use a large bar move your hands 2ft away from the nut might be 3 I can reread his mail and then tighten and you should be able to take your feet off the floor hence my mate standing on the engine.
Now as for the end play yes this has to be 100% correct or the expantion will not be enought and lead to a duff crankshaft. Loads of info out there get a DTI guage I have one here I can post to you if you get stuck.

You will also need a VW flywheel clamp as well.
