I think Andy is looking for torsion bars as in rear springs rather than ARB's, Graeme,[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]If that is the case I know Peter Empson at one point had some aftermarket ones he wasn't going to use.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Graeme,
thanks for your quick response, as Fen suggested Torsion Bas not ARBS, had a look at EBay though.

Fen, do you have his contact number.

For those that are interested:-

Bit more background on the application;

I've reshelled my Class 2 944S2 for this years championship. I ran last year without TB's but was generally unhappy with the set up of the car everywhere bar Donnington and Spa.

Also, a change from RHD to LHD was a key objective for me.

So this year I'll run TB's supplemented with Coil overs, Kevin and Alex of EMC have been supportive.

I want a selection of TB's to play with in an attempt to get the best compromise in set up.

If anyone on the forum wants more info on my car don't hesitate to contact me.

I don't have his number, but his username on here is Peter Empson, so you could mail him through the forum.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I'd be interested in seeing pics of the car, by the way.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

yes, pics of race car bits please, and an overview of what mods are allowed in class 2 if its not too much trouble,

Thanks Fen. Unfortunately they sold a short while ago, and are going to end up in a lightweight Lux trackcar.

I agree your car sounds very interesting, I would like to echo the requests for pictures too!

Best regards,
Peter.

Here's a start.

I'll post some pics once it has been painted.

Re specs; I have the regulations for 2006 that I can EMail to interested parties but the 'Club" championship is restrictive (the 'Open ' allows much more scope for modifications) in that the engines must be standard ie be within 5% of manufacturers peak BHP. Brakes are standard also but pad material is free.

944 Turbos cannot compete in Club (harder to regulate) but several do in the Open; Wayne Jackson and David Botteril to name two.

So whilst some may agrue that more mods should be allowed, the upside is that the Club Championship is very competitive offering close racing.

Suspension is free also although standard bushes must be retained. I'm using Leda's (I know there is split opinion on suspension on our forum). I had 600lb-in front and rear (too hard). I've reduced spring rates to around 450 front and a combination of 350 springs rear using 23.5mm TB's to start with. The Ledas are double adjustable and will allow a good scope to optimise bump and rebound to suit different track conditions.

S2 ARB front (27mm) Turbo S ARB rear (18mm)

GBox is standard but fitted with a Quaife ATB (Auto Torque Biasing) LSD, it's noiser than plate diff's

The biggest performance gain to be had in these cars is in weight reduction, my car last year was around 1110kgs. The car is completely stripped internally of all non essentials.

Steering; I'm running the PAS rack but unassisted so no plumbing, pump or fluid reservoir. It's only heavy when the car is stationary. Feed and return hydraulic pipes are looped to allow hydraulic fluid to circulate.

Single cooling fan with modified housing.

Most non essential wiring has been removed. The shell was a 944 Lux so I had to marry up the front engine loom section from my S2 with the main wiring loom of the 944 Lux.

The S2 was an 89 car as is the LHD Lux shell and During the build, I have to say that everything has fitted together perfectly. Actually, the 944 Lux was an automatic, so I have had to source a different brake pedal and fit a clutch pedal and master cylinder. But once the correct items were sourced it all fitted together really well (although it hasn't been on the track yet!).

Pads; tried M1155 & M1144 Mintex last year and finished using Pagid Blues front black fast road on the rear (used Castrol SRF fluid great stuff but costs megabucks per litre, trying Motul RBF this year-has a great reputation in the US).

I'll try Pagid Orange front and blues on the rears this season - I 'like Pagids I've used them on other cars but they crumble too quickly round the edges. I like the feel and bite of the pads.

Wheels; got to use 16" and restricted to max 8" width; using 8x16 on 245 45 16 Michelin cups alround.

Having rebuilt my current car from a bare shell that I got from Simon Butterworth of Porschapart, I would have a LHD car over RHD anyday. The 944 design was optimised for LHD;

-brake master cylinder in LHD position (better brake pedal feel)
-clutch reservoir shares brake fluid reservoir, shorter run to the clutch slave cylinder
-steering coupling is shorter therefore lighter
-wiring loom better suits LHD (Fusebox is drivers side)
-Engine is canted to the right, offsetting some of the drivers weight
-shorter/lighter throttle cable.

all off the top of my head in the early hours.

I'll be happy to field any more questions.

andy

PS. Of course Tom Segrue is the man to quiz as he drives with No.1 on his car this year. EMC built the car and it has performed stunningly so far.

Sounds good Andy. I'm especially interested in seeing the cage as mine is booked in for the second half of April to get one fitted.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]My steering is the same as yours and I agree - it's only just about manageable at low speed, but once over walking pace it's fine to marvellous.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I'd like to suggest Performance Friction 97 pads as recommended to me by Dave Malings - they're noisy and dirty (which you won't care about either) but they have superb fade resistance, feel and modulation and Dave tells me they wear well, too.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Fen,
cage is bolt in Safety Devices but I'm looking at a slightly different method of fitting it to the car (call me on this).

Of course bolt in allows you to remove the cage should you need to work inside the car at some point but weld in is better for making the car more ridgid alround (more mounting points).

I've changed the connecting hex bolts to black cheeseheads (higher tensile strength and looks better).
