I rebuilt mine with new bearings, as a distinct rumbling noise could be heard coming from inside the transmission tunnel at idle.
It might be worth having a good peer inside the inspection grommet holes (items 4, 5 and 20 attached).

The noise is similar to a cv joint clonk when pulling away and sharp turning.
I did wonder about wheel bearings but ther is no play or noise when spinning up the wheel.
Any advice where to go next would be really gratefully recieved.[&o]
many thanks

I once had an issue with a 'doink doink' sort of noise, under the same conditions, on an early steel-armed car.
It turned out to be due to a cracked inner thrust washer (item 2 attached). The bearings themselves were in remarkably good condition, spinning the wheel showed no play or noise.
I would be surprised to find the same problem on a later alu-armed car, due to the more modern one-piece sealed dual roller bearing design.
I'm scratching my head to think of other possibilities [&o]
- De-laminated rubber on the Gearbox mount(s)?
- Rubber clutch spring/damper on its way out?
